EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

Not me.

When I first installed them, I used 9v. I was really dissappointed with the way they sounded.

After changing them to 18v, I've been very happy.

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

I brought this up because of the way I've seen some people do the 18v mod, involving a third battery clip, so the mod is easily reversable. It left me wondering why on earth anyone would want to switch back to 9 :)

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

I used the three battery clip thing because it was;

1) Easy, and

2) At Radio Shack the clips came in packs of three anyway.

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

makes sense :)

I've been kicking this idea around: I have a guitar with two 81s, and I'd like to wire up the neck 18v and the bridge 9v. I think it would work, so long as I didn't attach the neck & bridge battery cables, thus keeping them separate circuits.

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

i installed the 18v mod when i first got EMGs in a plywood beater guitar - was ok for a while, soon got bored and sold them to a mate.

fitted them in his ibanez RG, could only fit 1 9v in - i dunno if it was the wood quality or what, but it sounded so much better *sigh*

Do you mind if I quote this every time someone says EMGs make all guitars sound the same, and kill off the tone of the wood?

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

yes, because i've said it in the past :laugh2:

it might be down to the 18v mod though lol

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

I always expain it as "Guitars have voices, and pickups are microphones. Give Frank Sinatra a POS Mic and he´ll still sound like Ol´Blue Eyes (RIP), but giive me a great mic and you´ll only hear real well how crappy I am. And guitars are exactly the same"

It doesn´t matter whether the Mic is active or passive, the preamp doesn´t influence ("Sterilize") the vibrations or signal, but merely amplifies it, with all that´s good and bad ;)

I´ll get down to trying the 18V mod soon, phoenix has room I think (although I´ve already had to move the Mounting clip from the back cover to the cavity wall....:D)

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

I couldn't believe how much it improved the tone, and I'm honestly surprised EMG doesn't bill them as 18v.

Here's a somewhat related question... I know that the Livewires are 18v, but will they only run at 18?

Ok . . . I gotta ask. Why do you need three battery clips to get 18 volts with two nine 9-volt batteries?

Because you build an 18v battery pack with them. The three 9v clips are soldered together in a Y-pattern, 2 of them are used for the batteries, the third gets hooked to the battery clip in the guitar. No modifications to the guitar needed. :)

Still yet to get a neck pickup, but I liked my 85 before. Like it more now, but thinkin about putting a custom or an 81 in there.

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

I preferred the 18 volt mod, so does my bass player buddy for his active bass

Thanks, and to screamingdaisy also. I knew there had to be a reason. :smack:

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

I've put EMG's in a japanese strat, Ibanez and Les Paul. Sounded totally different in each, and killer in the les paul, especially with 18 volts

Re: EMG 18v: Like or Dislike?

yeah, my reckoning is they work better in denser-wood guitars, from what i've seen now, anyway.
