EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

just a thought. you can even go for the emg ha in the neck. its an emg sa singlecoil in a humbucker housing. of course, the 89 is an 85 split-able to an sa. do note if its an 89 or 89r. 89 has the sa coil on the logo side. that is the bottom half of the bucker housing. the 89r has the sa coil in the top half of the bucker housing.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

I use an 81(bridge) and 85(neck) in a Les Paul into a Rectifier.

The 81 gives a great, very defined tone under high gain. The notes ring very well without going all muddy. It can sound a little thin under lower gain settings. If you're into low gain to med gain, I'd go 85. If you're into med to high gain, I'd go 81.

The 85 is a very fast pickup, and slurs the notes under high gain for a sweet and searing lead tone. For cleans though, it's far too bass heavy. I can get a very good clean tone out of it by using a Boss GE-7 to dump between -13 to -15db on the bottom 4 bands. If you're into shredding lead, this pickup would rock, if you're into lower gain stuff, I'd go EMG60 or 60a.

For heavy chugging rhythm work, I run on the middle position with the 81(b) at full output and turn up the volume on the 85(n) until it thickens up the sound without making it muddy.

The 85 has awesome harmonics when used in the neck.

Thank´s man
please, can you send me a soundclip of both pickups?

I'm not at home right now, but I'll be able to work on something tomorrow.

Re: EMG 81/85 or 85/81?(bridge/neck!)

85 is the best companion with an 81 bridge. i have 2 les pauls equipped with EMG's both with 81 in the bridge and one with the 85 in the neck and one with the 60. the 60 seems to be a little too fat and too muddy under high gain. the 85 is near perfect in the neck. sounds a lot more articulate and a little clearer. the 85's tone is very even unlike the 60. i am actually planning on replacing the 60 with another 85.

the clean on the 60, just like any active pu's: ugly, sterile and slightly distorted. not warm at all. EMG also claims that the 60 is the brightest pickup they make. but after owning the 81, 85 and the 60 for over 2 years... i think that the 81 is still the brightest of them all. the 81 is shimmery and very harmonic-frenzy. some say that the 60 is good for playing blues... but why bother playing blues with actives, when you can use passive humbuckers like the SD 59, alnico ii pro or the Dimarzio PAF... even the PAF Pro?

for a full lead metal/hard rock tone, 81b/85n is the way to go... if you don't believe me, ask Zakk Wylde!

This isn't true at all. I can get VERY warm tones with the 60 in the neck of my Les Paul...both clean and distorted.

I find the trick is to use an EQ. Since they're somewhat flat sounding, they respond very well to EQing prior to the preamp. I can get everything from warm and shimmer, to cutting metal with a few changes on the EQ.

Also, running them at 18v cleans up the compression really opens them up tonally.

I didn't even need to use an EQ...I just found them to work fine provided the amp is good although an EQ did enhance some characteristics.

i run my EMG's straight through the amp... maybe an EQ will tame the 60... but i think its still muddy and too fat :laugh2:

60's sound great straight to the board through an ART Tube MP. Awesome, sparkling cleans with enough meat to play with authority. :burnout:
