I have one in my Schecter and I like it a lot. I can't compare it to the 81 as I have never used one, but I do like it better than the 57. I needed more "umph" and the 81x provided that while still retaining a lot of the characteristics of a passive pick up. (It is the only active I use)

I must second that I've been told by EMG tech that an X series is basically the same as an 18 volt mod, tonality wise.

I do not consider 18v a "mod" anymore but rather a "must". That is, when I'm using EMGs.

Do you consider it as a must for humbuckers only, or for EMG singles as well?
