EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

I've got an old yamaha se 200 lying around. It's loks like a stra butr has a thicker body...
It got rosewood fretboard and a mahagony body (at least HC say this ;) )

I have to redo all the electronics. I think the cheapest way is to use EMGs so I don't have to buy any shielding material, pots or jacks.
It should get just one HB in the bridge and a volume pot!
This will be a backup coz I don't have any money left for guitars at the moment.

I play mostly "modern metal" like As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, Heaven Shall Burn, Poison The Well etc...

*edit*
Yeah and it will be tuned down to Drop C.

Which one would you suggest me?
Thx, Marcel xxx

EMG 81 is a bit thinner sounding, but it's grind will prolly take you where you want it to go. :bigthumb:

BTW, why did you remove the single coil out from your 550?

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

Thx!
The RG got a 5 way superswitch with:
Bridge / B split / B+N / N split / N

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

There was an A/B clip iin the T&C I think but I cant find it...someone got a link or the clips?

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

With an active pickup set, you're gonna need a different jack and 25k pots (if I remember correctly). EMG's come with the required electronics when they're brand new in the box, but if you're buying used, keep that in mind.

Oh, try the 81 first if the body is mahogany and you are down tuning.

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

IMO, the EMG81 is WAY too shrill and brigth.

The EMG85 is alot rounder and fatter to my ears.

haha ... I knew that this would happen! :D
DSS, will it stay tight? Don'T want too much bass as you know...

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

Well, to my knowlegde, all EMG's are extremely tigth and dry sounding.

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

**** yeah! Tighter than a dolphins anus! (trust me, I've been banned from Sea World for finding out)

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

After listening to the cllips on the emg website I wouldn't buy no emg :laugh2: sounds like metalzone straigh in the board... but the 85 sounds better.. but hard to tell with this ****ty sound...

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

My 81 pwns in my "mahogany" V-250 with Drop-A tuning.

Oh yeah, one of the guys from AILD plays an LP with a zakk set in the latest video ;)

No. That's why I took it out and put the 81 back in. Too bassy....slurs the attack too much.

The 81 is by far the tightest and most percussive of the two, having owned both. They both have their strong points.

Re: EMG 85 or 81 in bridge?

It depends a lot on the guitar IMO. In my my agathis sg- which is already pretty thing/cold sounding, the 85 is plenty tight, beefy, and very articulate. The 81 sounds harsh and thin in the bridge. BUT, in the neck of that guitar the 85 had far too much bass if I remember correctly. If the guitar already has a fairly fat sound to it you might just be better off with the 81. It's tighter, but they're both so tight anyway that the difference is negligible. Just go by the character of the guitar IMO.

In an LP though, right? I'd far prefer an 81 in an LP.

The 81 will be tighter, Marcel, but the 85 is by no means loose.

And in a alder Strat. No matter what wood you put it in the 85 just doesn't have the attack of the 81.

And I never said the 85 was loose, I said the extra bottom end slurs the attack.....when you're doing downstroked 8th notes it kills the machine gun effect.
