EMG HZ and the DD pickup

I recently (well, last night) undertook a small setup on my Epiphone LP Custom. Back in my college days, I'd replaced the bridge with a DD, but always kept the stock neck pickup. I think there was a time in college where I NEVER used the neck pickup. Age, and a mixture of not listening to "Rust in Peace" three times a day made me want to start using the neck pickup.* So last night I put in a spare H4A that I repo'd from a Damien Elite. I gotta say, that thing sounds surprisingly good. I'd only heard poopy comments about the HZ series, but this thing keeps up with the DD output-wise, and has pretty nice tones through the spectrum. Maybe the fact that it's sitting in a metric ton of mahogany helps, but the swap has proven pleasant so far. Anyone with more than 12 hours of play time on this pickup care to comment?

*oh, and John Frusciante

Re: EMG HZ and the DD pickup

Some of what you are experiencing may be the honeymoon period that comes with any new gear. Some of it might be because you have the EMG-HZ H4A in the neck/Rhythm position and you still have the DD on tap. If you only had two EMG-HZ humbuckers, it might be a different story.

As things stand, vive la difference. Enjoy.

The EMG HZ H4A is roughly based on the 85. Try it in the bridge.

Dom, thanks for the advice, I'll give it a shot. I have its matching H4 (ceramic instead of alnico I believe) around here somewhere too. I'm thinking of refinishing a $90 Gio60 I have laying around here somewhere...and I'll throw that in the Gio.
