EMG Retro Active pickups

Re: EMG Retro Active pickups

Interesting concept. Looks like they really worked hard and designed a set of pickups...oops, my mistake, I mean copied an already exiting design.......Yep Seymour already has this with he coil packs and Gus G pickups. Had if for several years. Funny they are touting the differential preamp and each coil is voiced differently...Um I think we heard this before.

You do realize Duncan was not the first company to use a passive pickup/active pre amp set up right ? Its been used for decades in basses

Re: EMG Retro Active pickups

Most noise from any pickup has more to do with how "hot" the pickup is and how much gain is used. Hotter pickups will seem noisier because the pickup is more sensitive and the same is true in a higher gain amp. The noise is not generated by the pickup itself but picked up by the pickup. Very similar to how a mic gets more sensitive when the gain is turned up. Most noise floor ratings on active pickups are the noise floor of the pre-amp and has nothing to do with anything but that. The pre-amps in actives are extremely quiet. Now if the pre-amp is the issue, it usually results in "white noise" or hiss

Electro magnetic interference with power lines or powerful radio stations nearby has nothing to do with pickup noise or quality. The strings on your guitar and pickups become transducers and amplify any thing they can detect. Hotter pickups = better ability to pickup noise.

The reason you will see that actives are touted as quieter is because the signal leaving the pickup is Low impedance. In simple terms low impedance means higher current flow, higher current flow is less susceptible to interference because the signal is stronger than the interfering signals around and less susceptible to capacitance. Passive pickups are high impedance, meaning very low current flow, and the signal is fairly weak, thus the need for shielded cable. So actives are less likely to have noise issues generated by lower quality cables.

But most pickup noise is not pickup noise, it is noise around you amplified by the pickup.

Re: EMG Retro Active pickups

it seems to me that that the EMGs have a flat/generic sound, I would go for a Duncan for paf voicing, if the noise is a problem i have noise gates

I have both RetroActive sets and I do prefer the FAT55 set this is mostly due to my preference for A5 or A2 over ceramics. As for the P.A.F. voice question the RetroActives have this for sure.
I did just ordered a Duality as well. The tone search continues.

looking forward to hearing your take on the offerings from both brands

Re: EMG Retro Active pickups

If I can sell off a few pickups right quick, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and join the preorder for the Duality...ugh, the G.A.S. is strong

Re: EMG Retro Active pickups

I bought a LTD ec1000fr with the EMG 81/60 set and swapped them for the Fat 55 set as soon as I could (it was my plan to change pickups even before I purchased the guitar as there were no pickup options on the floyd equiped ec1000 models) and they certainly made a world of difference.
I can now get the sounds I want rather than the generic heavy metal tones from the 81/60 set.
