dumb question, but can you get alexi laiho tones out of the Evo? Alexi's tone sound very similar to that of Vai's...

??? I really don't find any similarities with Vai and Laiho's tone. If your asking if EVO's will do metal, the answer is yes.

Deadskinslayer3,
As a player who has been gigging on a regular basis since I was 13 years old and has been playing Metal music longer than you've been alive, I've had a lot of experiences with practically every pup out there. I don't know how many years you've been playing or how many tours you've played or how many albums you've put out but I don't think you've had the same playing experiece most of us at this forum have had.
When someone like ARCHER OF FISH makes an opinion, I'll listen due to his age and his experience as a player who obviously knows his gear. If he hates EMG's that's fine. I've been putting up with EMG criticism for years but due to ARCHER OF FISH's experience over mine, I'll take what he says more seriously than that of someone who's only musical knowledge doesn't extend beyond Metal.
So before you call someone's opinion RETARDED, make sure you have the experience needed to back it up...JUNIOR!!!

Re: EMG vs. Dimarzio

The evo's have a tight rhythm sound and the lead sound is phenomenal, the emg wont come close for lead and will suffer on clean, the emg will outshine it in only one thing and thats the high gain rhythm playing and low string riffs, well in my oppinion anyway, im not comparing the pickups from the same guitar but with my Jem vs my friends ESP KH-2.

I voted for EMG, because, although I didn't like EMGs in some of my other guitars, when I put a 81/85 set in my PRS (replacing a SD Mayhem set :guilty: ) I was completely blown away.
:eek2:

Just wait a second here.... Your judging his opinion because of his age? Although I can see where you are coming from, and that infact with age comes experience. But if I were DSS I would be extremely insulted. And who are you to say the Jeff's knowledge doesn't extend beyond metal? Do you know him personally?

By the way, I'm not quite sure how Jeff's remark concern's archer of fish in any way. All he said was that he disagree's. All are entitled to there own opinion, even if it be that another person's is "retarded" even though I disagree with using that term in the said way, but non the less it is Jeff's opinion. Regardless of age, respect that.

Just like SpeedDemon said, age has no bearing on experience or tone. I don't care how long you've been playing, or how many tours you've done. I'll admit that using the word 'retarded' was off, but every DiMarzio I have ever played has been clear and defined under high gain. I've tried the Evo bridge and neck, PAF Pro and Air Norton neck, ToneZone bridge, and Steve's Special bridge. That said, with good technique, nearly all pickups will remain clear and defined under high gain.

My point is, it boils down to personal preference, and your mentioning of my age was completely irrelevant and immature.

Re: EMG vs. Dimarzio

O.K., this is not going to be a back and forth argument. Anybody interested in what has transpired here can read this whole thread and make up there own minds.

Deadskinslayer3 has admitted that using the word "RETARDED" was off line and that's all I needed to hear so thanks for being a man about it and admitting you were wrong so as far as I'm concerned, this is squashed.

Rock on, brother!!!

did Vai use the Evo's on the song "The Boy From Seattle"?! the clean tone on that song sounds AWESOME!

For the clean parts in "The Boy from Seattle", Vai used a $400 Japanese Strat. (He says so in the commentary on the ALS DVD.)

I have an EVO in a Jackson, and it's perfectly suited to Alder bodies with bolt-on necks. I've tried it in Basswood, and in Mahogany/Maple (Like LP's and PRS's) and in Poplar. Alder is it's home. It is extremely powerfull, very articulate and will not hide ANYTHING. If you are a sloppy player, it will expose you. The 81 will too, but to a lesser extent.

It's mids cut through anything, has a very tight bottom end and amazingly smooth yet cutting highs.

Not for the faint of heart :)

Good luck!

sounds like an SH-5 Custom... but with more power and less bass. if that's the case, the Evo's exactly what im looking for! Also from what I hear in Vai's tunes, the harmonics are more aggressive and upfront than the Custom. the 81 that i had before never really "exposed" my sloppiness. It was actually very controllable. although it was the total opposite with the Custom that I had. it exposed even the subtlest movements of my right hand and i found it very annoying.

It sounds nothing like the Custom....it has more mids, less bass, and it's just alot more "in your face sounding" for lack of a better term.

i guess what i was trying to say was: its articulate LIKE the Custom... but i did say that the Evo has more power, less bass and more upfront (i guess you could also say "in your face").

i didnt mean that they both sound the same, i was just trying to say that both pickups still have similarities in one or two cases. but i apologize for any miscommunication nonetheless... it's been a while since i used my Evo's.

This would have been good if "Junior Member" wasn't under your screen name. :smack:

Re: EMG vs. Dimarzio

I just got back from rehearsal with my Evo equipped PRS Custom 22. the Evolution was everything i expected and wanted from a pickup. Crunchy tight rhythm with enough low end... not too fat like the Custom, not too thin like the JB. It has all of the aggressiveness of a DD, and The Harmonics..... oooohhhhhhh the pinch harmonics... just screamed out of my guitar.

both the bridge and the neck model are tight in solos, and the notes are very, very defined with fast picking, tapping and expecially playing legato. the mids on this pup announces you loud and clear. you would never get lost in the mix with these. the neck is surprisingly warm with high gain. plugged in my friend's triple XXX... its UNHOLY!!! im sold on this one.
