EMG vs. SD

Re: EMG vs. SD

EMGs are definitely hotter than any passive I have tried other than the X2N. Whether that is definitive or perceived hotness doesn't matter to me....they just drive the amp harder.

The the 81 is also more aggressive than any passive I've tried....although the Evolution comes close.

Not necessarily... LastWinJ explained it to Bones and I one time on yahoo, as Bones found his Custom hit his amp harder and produced more gain than his EMG's. It's something to do with the harmonic structure.

It's like how DC Resistance can't measure exactly how hot a pickup is, it can just put you in the right ballpark.

Also, EMG's are fairly underwound, it's the preamp that boosts the output.

Not only did I say that, but my duncans are louder than my EMGs as far as volume.

Ok, so yours are right, and everyone else's in the world are wrong?

A side by side comparison of my Ibanez and a ESP KH2 says I am right, unless ESP and I wired ours wrong.

Re: EMG vs. SD

Lets end this once and for all. EMG's are much hotter than any passive "in terms of output". Even EMG single coils are hotter than humbucker passives with .6v output. They sound more clean so you probably don't percieve them as full maybe as passives and thus you think they aren't as hot. The 81 and 85 can peak at 3v but their RMS value is at 1v!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<------------!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_!_! So now tell me they aren't hotter output wise than a passive.Yes they have a weak magnetic field but it doesn't matter as they have a built in pre amp.

Re: EMG vs. SD

My EMG's are definatly louder than my passives even my Invader. I may be able to agree that percieved loudness may be higher with some passives depending on the frequency. Example like on my Marshall if i pump in 6 db with an eq pedal upfront,if i use only the 800hz slider i will get a increase in crunch and some extra loudness and this isnt just cause of the boost but also the human ear hears those frequencies easier so the perception is louder. Now if i do the same but use the 100hz slider it doesnt add more crunch but it does get slightly louder but not as much as the same at 800. Like this I could see how you might think one pickup is louder than another but it really isnt just your amp likes the frequncies that your feeding it better.

@deadskinslayer

Very cool man I'm glad you found one you like. I wonder how hes got his actives/passives set up? After you play that 81 in a shred-tastic jackson you might not want to ever go back to passives!
