Re: Emg81 vs Bare Knuckle Pickup Aftermath

Aftermath sounds fuller than the EMG81 and does not need batteries, even if it's twice the price the EMG81.

Funny, I recently put a 500T in my Gibson LP Studio in order to shortcut my way into tone, but I need the Aftermath. The 500T is being returned... it is too gritty to my tastes. I prefer clarity that BKP pickups are known for. Moreover, it would compliment my neck pickup, The Mule by BKP, in the neck which is sweetest of the sweet to my ears.

The EMG81 sounds tighter than the Aftermath.
Obviously better IMO.

Each to his own. I do not think any passive can be tighter than an EMG81 or any quality active pickup out there and conversely no active pickup can be as organic as the passive pickup. That is the nature of passive vs. active I suppose.

If there is a passive pickup tighter than an EMG81 then please point me to it, but I doubt it has great tonal qualities. If there is an active that responds like a passive pickup then point me to it as well. So far I have tested the EMGs and the Blackouts and since then I have always found myself playing the passives.

It is possible that the Aftermath's tightness is covered by the organic aspect of the pickup, being passive, and the added bass prominent in the clip. Since the EMG81 does not seem to have either, tightness is easily heard.

The Aftermath is a REALLY tight humbucker to my tastes and moreover it the humbucker of choice I prefer.

Like I said, each to his own.

They both sound great but to my ear I would stick with my EMG. I do like how the clip was done, very cool!

Re: Emg81 vs Bare Knuckle Pickup Aftermath

What do y'all mean when you refer to "tightness" as a sound quality?

And how would you use EQ/dynamics processing to "tighten" or "loosen" a particular sound?

tight bass is when the low end doesn't
carry over to the next not. This is usually accomplished by scooping out the lowest frequencys. Its a bass that punches hard and fast instead of just hanging around like a freeloading fat cousin.

GREAT answer man!

Re: Emg81 vs Bare Knuckle Pickup Aftermath

the Aftermath pickup sounded too "wimpy" for me. Emg 81 was BRUTAL!

Re: Emg81 vs Bare Knuckle Pickup Aftermath

I didnt actually watch this earlier, the 81 does sound better, but it still sounds like sh!t. That's a nasty tone, and not in a good way. I'd like to hear them compared doing a thrash riff or something without that generic ass tone. Something like the demo that compared the 81, BO and the DD.
