This guy's got it except for the fact that my 81 in my mahogany EC-400 RIPS and definitely doesn't have a problem cutting through

I'm not saying that with the right EQ and guitar the 81 can't cut through, just generalizing that all other things being equal the JB will cut through a mix better than the 81.

I tried the EMG81 bridge on my Gibson Explorer and it sucked in my opinion of course.. But in my basswood charvel, it sounds awesome now, rocks hard and great for solo stuff.

try the active dave mustaine set!
you get a JB type tone but with the benefits of the active 81( sounds to me to be the best of both worlds that way)

yeah i've heard lots of great pickups sound horrible and muddy just due to the guitar they are in. I wish more people would understand that. Some use a pickup once and think.........wow it sucks. yet in another guitar it may be absolutely perfect.

Exactly what I am going through except with a LP custom. I have a ZW set in my custom and it sounds great on rhythms but awful and thin as someone mentinoed here on leads.

I want thick fat singing leads....... so would that be he fat assed JB?

Although thinking of throwing the 85 in there to check also.

BTW yes 85 has more bass then 81 for sure.
