Legend GB128: "Has a Private Jack flavor, but with improved definition."

I listened to the sound samples several times and they do sound alike except the GB128 sounds woodier and tighter, and the Private Jack sounds looser and more detailed. The GB128 is $20 cheaper. It makes me wonder if the Legend series is kind of the Eminence equivalent to Duncan Designed, where it's still an Eminence but cheaper. Before I purchase one, I'd like to rely on your experience. what do you think?

I bet if you put some fabric softener on the 128, you would end up with the same sound. I have not used Jacks, just because the 128s rock very nicely at a lower price point.

GB128 are Green Backs clones, but with more bottom end and more watts... they are awesome, they are my favorite speakers.

Legends don't color the sound as much as most other speakers. They aren't a knock-off or a lesser line. They are quality speakers. One mistake I have seen many make is they lump all the Legends in together if they even realize there are different models. Each Legend has its own individual characteristics.

The Private Jack is brighter than the GB128 and it has more grit to it. I think they work good if put in a 4x12 with two other speakers that have more bass to them. Actually, I've never tried it, but two PJ's at the top and two GB128's at the bottom in a 4x12 may just be a good recipe. I will have to try that at some point.

No matter what you do, don't sweat the quality of the Legends. They are a quality speaker line. Many people favor them over everything else. It was not a case of being all they can afford.

Are you serious, can you put fabric softener on the speaker paper? Is that a safe method? What effect is intended by doing such a thing?

From the sound samples I gravitate towards the Private Jack, but there is something about the GB128 that I keep going back to compare it. They both sound great and would be an enormous upgrade from the stock 70/80. If I decide to quit amp hunting and just go back to Marshall, I would like that the speaker I choose will also be a great fit for a Marshall amp.

From what I know the legends are the original speakers that were made that worked amazingly well that have been built on from there moving into the other lines.

I generally think of them as the classics so to speak
