Engineers...got a question.

Hey everyone,

I have a room in the basement that is dedicated as my "studio". I'm thinking of building either a large isolation box or perhaps creating a small room inside the main room (probably no bigger than 5 x 6) to house the guitar amp. This would enable me to hear the miced amp through the monitors thereby helping me to position the mic for the best sound. It would also aid in recording multiple tracks of guitars...the original track and the new track playing through the monitors with no bleed from the amp blaring in the same room.

First of all are my assumptions as to the benefits correct so far?

If they are what should I build? Obviously something big enough to house an amp, mics and mic stands but beyond that how big is big enough? How big is too much? Should I anlge the walls so no two are parallel? I know I'd want to treat the room after it's built.

Please give me any insight you guys can on this. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Scott

Re: Engineers...got a question.

Have you considered getting an iso cab instead of building a booth?

Re: Engineers...got a question.

Stay away from Iso cab - they'll never sound as good as a normal cab.

Too many standing waves and all kinds of **** going on.

Re: Engineers...got a question.

A guy on the sneap forum was getting good results from an iso box he bought. A few of the guys there were building their own if I remember correct. I don't think you'll get a small room sound proof enough to the point that you're just hearing the monitors. With the box you could run cable into it and get it as far away as it needs to be. I think the upside of building a booth though is that it could double as a vocal booth. Some guys just hang a curtain of foam for that though so either way.

Do you mean that guy who was recording his bands stuff in his apartment? I think it was like a Recto and a JCM800?

That sounded like ****!

I've gotten my small (like 3x4 foot with standard ceiling) closet soundproofed enough so that I can only hear it in the monitors... All it took was some foam insulation for pipes on the doorframe, and some foam under the cabinet's wheels. It's a bit hard to shut the door now, but it works like a charm!

I just got my Firepod today, so I'll have 5150 clips up tomorrow, in this little closet.

For the room, you're basically going to want to build a room inside a room, with some air between the two walls, as the combination of air and mass is what soundproofs it. I'd also consider floating the floor.

For treatment, eliminate all parallel angles, reflective surfaces, and anything that would create standing waves.

no, I don't think we're thinking of the same guy. Trying to think what amp he was using... it was marshally but it wasn't a marshall and def. not a recto. Anyway, he was super evh influenced and the box was big enough to house his 4x12 and the mic stand. The clips were mostly lead playing. I dunno- sounded really good to me, but then that was some time ago too. I heard your clip today man- sounded nice! the firepod sounds tons better than the studio projects pre did.

Re: Engineers...got a question.

Hahaha damn you JUMPED on that link - I only had it up for about an hour, and the mix is all out of wack. The drums, gats, and bass are all sounding much better, though, methinks. I found out I was accidentally running the RBass plugin I had on the toms on the snare as well - it hits REALLY hard. :laugh2:

Was it that guy who sounds like a Steve Vai impressionist? If so, the lead stuff sounded great, I will admit, but theres less going on in leads as compared to rhythms.

Re: Engineers...got a question.

Yep! that sounds about right. You're right of course- there's a lot more to worry about with rhythm tracks. I mean- I can get good lead sounds out of my peavey bandit at a moderate volume but never once in countless experiments got a good sounding heavy rhythm. Still, I got the impression from his clips/that thread that the iso box worked pretty well. Well enough that it wouldn't be a nightmare to iron out any kinks anyway.

Haha, yeah no one had even replied yet when I saw you'd posted that. I wasn't paying attention to the drums honestly- the dissonance thing going on had my attention and then when the rhythm came in I sort of just focused on that. It's really very clear sounding. Did you change the tone as well or is that all the preamp?

CONTACT STEVE GUATHIER@SAVIOURSOUND.COM, HE BUILT A VERY FINE RECORDING STUDIO IN HIS BASEMENT. AND GET THIS, HE ACTUALLY HAS A PRETTY GOOD BUSINESS GOING IN THE DEMO MARKET. (ALL DONE @ SAVIOUR SOUND).
