Engl 530 for recording ...

Hello!

I have been interested in an Engl 530 preamp for a while. I have not picked it up yet as I am not able to try it. It seems to get some positives and negative comments. Most of the discusison however appears to be related to live use. I thought I would see if there were thoughts on it as a recording preamp.

I would run it into my ADA Micro Cab (effects processor and/or eq perhaps) to a board. I play clean to classic rock, with some desire on occasion to go with a very smooth (Santanaish) type of high gain lead tone.

I am looking at a full tube preamp in this context as I want to be able to react it as an amp and hit it with pedals like an amp. Several of the preamps I have tried do not clip like a regular amp whne hit with a tube screamer for a boost for example. I do not want this type of preamp at all.

Others to consider I suppose ...

Carvin Quad 4
Rockmaster Preamp

I do not wish to spend over $500 here.

Re: Engl 530 for recording ...

Engl 530 is the best preamp I have ever owned, hands down. I had no complaints when playing live with it, and I did utilize the loop alot. It has the most usable gain of any preamp I have ever heard. It goes from subtle to face ripping distortion in the turn of a knob.

If you hold off a week or so, I may be selling my small "home rack" set-up, which includes a 530 and an old school Mesa 50/50 power amp (with half power switch).

I will only be looking for a preamp. But, if you are breaking them up I would possibly be interested.
