Engl Fans?

Mind telling me anything you know about the Screamer 50 Head (price? tone? etc,) or just about ENGL amps in general?

Re: Engl Fans?

Engls are great if you play power metal. Price to performance ratio is off the hook.
I love my Engl preamp!
I prefer the Powerball, over the Screamer, tho.

There's a screamer on Ebay? How much do they (the Screamers) go for list price, anyway? That was another question I had...

I don't really play powermetal, but if the amp has four distinctive tones on it I'd be willing to check it out...and I am!

Anything else to say about the Screamer or ENGL's?

I bet it's even better if you happen to live in Europe.
That it is my friend :)
The ENGL Screamer has a great clean channel and lots and I mean lots of gain. I know a guy who owned a modded 5150 combo and said the distortion of the Screamer reminded him of his 5150. Tons of bottom end and clarity, I posted something earlier about this amp. Sure it's no Powerball or Savage but it surely is a close runner up. Check out some clips on rocksolidamps.com , I found them to be suprisingly accurate in representing the real amp's tone.

Re: Engl Fans?

I own a thunder 50 head (slightly less switching options than the screamer, similar design) and it kicks some serious a$$ !!

It's very versatile and you get huge tones from clean to high overdrive.

About price , rather cheap but I'm in Europe too ...

Re: Engl Fans?

I have a Thunder 50 Combo (with a 12'' Celestion V12-80 stock) and I absolutely love it. You can play whatever from clean to full overdrive. The clean channel it isn't a cristal clear solid state one, which isn't a bad thing all. It is that kind of warm clear tones from tube apmplifiers that make them so desirable. In fact I have a Fender Princeton (solid State) which has a better "clear" chanel but it is that clynical that becames very cold.

With the other channels (crunch and lead) and playing with gain knob allows you to get any type of overdrive you want. The tone knobs are very ussable and work perfectly. The spring reverb (only in the Thunder amp) has a good quality althoug on high setting it gets a bit mushy.

I have bought it here in Spain and it was very cheap comparing with the Fender and Marshall options.

Re: Engl Fans?

Sound clips would be appreciated!

But why are they so cheap in Europe? What does that mean about the price here in the US?

I play things like Tool, Fuel, The White Stripes, The Killers, and Incubus...so, would the Screamer still be up my alley? or would I be more of a Thunder guy?

Re: Engl Fans?

I don't know much about the screamer but I can tell you the Thunder has enought gain to shred with plenty and enought output to make you desire earplugs. So I think your decition won't a matter of tone, gain or output.

But if you talk about features I think the Screamer clearly beates the Thunder. The Thunder offers you 2 channels (crunch and lead are the same chanel but with a different gain stage) and a reverb. The Screamer offers you 4 channels, a XRL line out output to plug it to the mixing desk, a reverb and a bright swithch. But, apart from the XRL line out (which it is a great feature if you like home recording), the rest of features seems to be unnecesary. I mean, aren't 2 gain channels and a reverb more than enought? If the tone of the amp it is good that should be the most important feature.

So, I guess your decition depends on what you are looking for. The Thunder offers great tone with enought features to make it very versatile IMO. The Screamer goes one step forward and makes it a tweaker paradise...
