Engl in a box?

Yeah, I know the Engle tube pre-amp is pretty good and rocksolidamps offer it for less than $600, but about a cheaper solution for something that you can throw infront of an amp and get a Powerball typa' kick in the nuts?

Re: Engl in a box?

try
PTERODRIVER PD-5
http://www.yerasov.ru/effects.htm

its a superior price/quality thing, it costs 180$
but with right tube amp it sounds like big Engl
its a slightly moded screamer/530 engl's products....
small but great! i dont now how do you purshase it from russia but nothing can compare with this thing price/tone/size
4 realy diferent tone...
clean low
clean high
lead low
lead high
see 530 description...its close functionally....but knobs are
Cl Vol Cl Gain
Lead Vol Lead Gain
and 3knob shared EQ

samples not good but
it is...

good luck! ;)

Re: Engl in a box?

hm...that pedal sounds really close to a screamer and all channels and for the price i guess you'll get a nice range of tones. If you want the screamer sound i'd say get this but the Powerball is a way different beast.
The PB has this huge but ultra-tight lowend that will feel like getting kicked in the chest at loud volumes and a lot of options(like open/focused mid switch) that can shape your sound. The PB sound most people know also comes from V30s and a cranked up Poweramp. Imo that's impossible to replicate.
If you really need Engl ina box watch for a Engl Tube Toner. it's basically a floor preamp with a tube inside and it kicks serious butt, but it's discotinued and not cheap(around 400-500 i'd guess)

Well at least its one more for me to the fact that I am really looking for V30s not this night mare I have now called G12T75s. That's exactly why I am wondering
about Engl I have riffs that are these single note, palmuted riffs, a lot of times its pedal-note riff too and they are always alternate picking, so they just beg for that tight low end of Engl only Engl has .....

Engls are definitely tailored for use with V30s, i've tried different cabs with my PB but the V30 Engls just sounded the best.
And that playing you describe really screams for an Engl. Where do you live and do you have any budget to achieve that tone?

Hey Chief, I live in San Fran, the budget is a issue as I am full time in school right now, that's why now I am looking for "Engl in a box." I am really in to the heavy, sabath-like british tone as well, and perfectly happy with my AOR except in the instances like I've described where Engl is a must, simply. What do you think of E 530 in the loop of AOR ?

Re: Engl in a box?

Hey just out of curiosity what does this sound like to you?

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=619585&songID=5433957

It's a box running straight into the board/DAW with very slight "amp EQ" and a little bit of stereo reverb. That's literally all there is. There's no amp, no speaker, no hyperactive EQ, no software processing. I also left out the bass guitar so you don't have an artificial impression of the low end.

So again, what does it sound like to you? I'm not asking does it sound good or does it suck, just what type of overdrive character do you think it has? I don't think it's like an ENGL in a box, but that's something I want to know. I've played just about everything out there, except ENGL's. I've heard them live and recorded, but since I haven't played one I don't know how it responds to picking dynamics and such. Thanks and sorry if this seems like a hijack.

Edit: also it's a Custom Custom bridge pickup, which is the big surprise.

Re: Engl in a box?

Hey dude, YOU RIP!!! It has a very nice mids spike, so i am gonna gues its something with tweakability, I would say its either SFOX 03 or Lava Box or that Mesa floor pre-amp that Zerb use to use. Now, I like the tone a lot, very Lynch, very warm and .... not like Engl, when I think Engl i think almost a dedicated EQ compressor for wounded stirngs, huge, defined, tight bass with absolute control under palm mutes. I really like the tone and your chops man.

Hey thanks man! I agree with you. From everything I've heard from Engl they almost have a Krank-ish chug down in the low end. But they also have a real crisp cutting high end and I think this box does that. But the lows are more Mesa. Plus it's the Custom Custom which has really spongy lows. I'd like to do the same riff with Blackouts and/or something passive with a Ceramic magnet. The CC is like the worst match up for that box.

Re: Engl in a box?

:nono: No way, I'm sworn to secrecy! :laugh2:

It just seemed relevant to this thread. I mean, I knew it's not the tone you're requesting, but its a "box" that performs the function you describe so this seemed like a low profile thread to gather opinions. A very specific thread like this will usually have a smaller audience and a shorter life, and I don't want a ton of people hearing that clip right now. It's not really fit for public consumption. But since I've never actually played through an Engl myself, I wanted to see how an Engl fan would describe this OD character, which is exactly what you did.

Thank you!:bigok:

Re: Engl in a box?

The box does the high end quite well, but the lows lack the punch of a PB, but damn if this is just a box into board it kicks some serious ass.

Re: Engl in a box?

The lows and mids on that box remind me of the VHT Deliverance a little bit. The high end is quite different though.

Re: Engl in a box?
