ENGL Straight 100?????

I did search and found a little info., but...specifically...
I play non-trad blues, fusion, and jazz. My tone ranges from clean to mod OD (Robben Ford), to Scott Henderson dirty. Effects are generally light to mod. Barber Small Fry, Maxon SD-9, TS9, or a Raton for dirt. Sometimes a little chorus with the hollow or semis. Delay from time to time. Sonic Fusion boost/OD. Anything else is not used often enough to mention. All kinds of guitars from solid to hollow. Singles...buckers...no Trons to date. I have several amps, but always interested in trying stuff. So, I've been shopping a Carvin Vintage 33 w/ Mojotone BB and I've been offered an ENGL Straight 100 1x12 for it. I have no idea what this amp is like. Can you help me out?

Re: ENGL Straight 100?????

Dunno about the Straight 100. But as the current owner of a Powerball 2 and having played the Blackmore, Fireball 60 and 100, Gig 15 and 30, and Steve Morse... I think that it's certainly worth looking into for you. I dunno... because of your style being what it is, that Carvin may end-up fitting you more. But if you can get your hands on them to try them, do it. I'm pretty impressed with the clean tones in my Powerball (for being more of a "metal" or do-it-all type of amp). The cleans aren't quite Fender or Bogner Shiva pristine... but they're pretty close. Anyways... just my nearly worthless $.02 on the issue.

Re: ENGL Straight 100?????

Below is a link to someone selling an ENGL Straight on Craigslist. You can check out his description. It is an older ENGL, which probably doesn't have much in common with the newer Powerball, Fireball, Gigmaster, etc. I did have a late '80s E520 preamp and E920 poweramp. Both were very high quality and had great tone. Those were more Marshall voiced rather than the newer tone we associate with ENGL. I say go test it out and see what you think. It has tons of switches, so it is probably extremely versatile. If it really was meant to compete with the Mesa Boogie Mark series amps, it'd be a keeper. Check it out and let us know!

Re: ENGL Straight 100?????

Yeah...that's actually the one I'm looking at. I would love to believe that it's a MB Mark wannabe, but...is it? I don't have any clue and you know Boogies...takes me a year to dial them in by chance. That's partially just me.
So, I'd have to mess with it for a week or so before I really understood the character. I'm not gonna ask the guy to agree to that.
That's why if someone has used one, I'd dig the input.
Thanks folks...appreciate the responses!

Re: ENGL Straight 100?????

It's the best engl ever made...
It has nothing to do with todays ****...

Pray tell... grace us with a list of your current amps so I can see what mind-blowing gear that you select from on high for your amplification needs?

engl fanboy...
Instead of the amps that I have I'll tell you about the engls I USED to have as I was an engl fanboy too...

Engl Scramer:Pretty versitile amp with 4 channels...loved the first channel...liked the lead...didn't care about the rest...
Engl Fireball:Sorry but that was a junk...scooped as hell...compressed and a costant narrow sound...I changed settings,tubes,speakers...nothing...
Engl Blackmore:Best amp in the current Engl production...nice warm sound...pretty raw if needed...I enjoyed it a lot...too bad the PT fried and I changed it for the next...
Engl Invader:Liked the clean channel...liked the second...liked the third when playing alone-lacked balls with a band...(today's engl problem...they lack balls)hated the lead...Same narrow sound as the fireballl...

these are the engls I used to have...I have tested also powerball,savage,straight...The last was the best engl sound I have tested and the BLmore was the best of the production line...
I don't expect you to agree...it's my opinion...if you're happy with your engl fine...I was not...with any of them( I liked blackmore a lot though) and I wouldn't change my single channel Soldano Avenger with any of them...(btw my amplification needs is cab-amp-cable-guitar...nothing more...my volume knob does the "channel switching thing"...some mind-blowing gear right?)

Only an Engl "fanboy" because I really like many of the ones I've played. Early on though... it was a 50% deal because I liked the Blackmore, but hated the early Fireball 60. It was a buzzy mess, like a Crate. But I've played the newer Fireballs and they are vastly superior to that early 60 I played (a friend owned it).

I've owned/gigged and/or had in my possession a lot of nice amps over the past several years (Bogner XTC, Twin Jet and Shiva, H&K Triamp, VHT UL, Elmwood M60, Aiken Intruder, etc) and the Powerball 2 that I currently own stands up with ALL of them. So you're complete dismissal of all new Engls as "crap" was just too much for me. A statement like that is rubbish and you know that.

This whole gear "competition" is just a huge waste of time. Because we all hear things differently and we all dial-in our amps differently. And as much fun as it is to talk gear and tone on the internet, it's mostly pointless... because again -- we're all different in our needs/wants/likes/dislikes/etc.

Re: ENGL Straight 100?????

I totally agree with you on the waste of time thing...
That's why i tried to expalin WHY I consider these amps crap...
If you like them it's ok...If you can get the tone you're looking for then it's great!!!
But if someone asks my opinion about engl I'll tell them that they are crap...
many great companies make crap amps sometimes but TO ME engl made an amazing straight...a very very nice blmore and the rest are not even in the same league as other companies that cost less...my avenger cost 1000Euros...same as thw blmore and too me sound better, feels better and it's made better...
btw the blmore's fried transformer was smaller than a selfphone...I don't know...maybe I got unlucky...
to sum up, the important thing is the tone...not how you make it or with what...If you're happy with the powerball then I am really glad!!!
It's a matter of taste...
