Engl Thunder 50 vs Marshall DSL40c for metal/rock.

I own the Marshall DSL40C and was thinking of replacing it with the Engl Tunder 50. I'm just looking for more metal sound but to still be able to play rock blues etc. So bottom line of this thread is what are your opinions on the Engl Thunder 50?

I used to have a Thunder 50 Reverb. it was a great amp for rock and classic metal tones. It doesn’t have the low end of a Powerball or other big ENGL amps but it will go heavier and still be clearer than the Marshall. The thing with ENGL is that they really have their own thing going on tonally...they have a very unique sound.

If you like the Marshall sound that ENGL won’t do that type of sound

IMO keep the Marshall and find a pedal that takes it into the crush-zone. (those already do the crunch-zone nicely)
That said I'd love to have the Engl too!

Tube distortion from Engl preamp is way better than pedal powered DSL I think. But that's two different tones...

Engl does both better, cleans and higher gain. Marshall does the Marshall tones.

I thought of getting Engl Screamer or Thunder first, but later decided and bought Randall Diavlo 45. I'd like to try one of these in the future..

I would just use a pedal to boost the Marshall's tube gain. Pedal+12ax7 always defeats all-tube gain IMO. (for extreme-music type gain)

Personally I've found the 12x7 gain stages stacked to be my thing. If I count right, the preamp of my amp boosted in front makes 3 (or four...). Pushed with reasonable gain (not too much) it makes awesome juicy grind.

Haven't found a ss pedal that could top that in clean or gritty amp. But like I said, it's different thing.

What do you mean by "boosted in front"?
Do metal guys often run boost into Engl?

I boost with a fryette SAS EF86 tube pedal its pretty awesome it adds fatness , gain and dynamics

I have Egnater Rebel, not Engl... Just thought to point out the difference cascading stages does. Running treble booster in front of it with gain on amp lower does give a different type of distortion than just dialing in more. More due to the extra stage than eq.

Distortion pedals are yet another thing that adds the grit of the pedal itself.
