Entry level piezo pickup bass

Hi guys,
Do you have any advice for someone considering experimenting with a piezo pickup bass? In the event that the electronics suck, as long as the body is drilled I could replace bad electronics with better stuff.

I like the sound of a lot of piezo basses and would like to experiment with them on a passive bass.

Thanks.

Better basses will have better transducers. Cheap transducers will shatter from the low-end a bass puts out, which is one reason Jackson stopped doing piezo basses back in the late 80s - they couldn't find transducers of consistent quality. Of course, this was before Fishman and Barcus-Berry and the like started making serious headway in the field, so you might be able to find a quality bass-specific transducer nowadays, but I still don't think you're going to get a good one cheap.

Carvin offers a few piezo bass models, Spector also makes an inexpensive semi-hollow piezo / electric bass called the Spectorcore.

I've also been really impressed by the Lightwave basses, which include a piezo function for the high end. They sound amazing, especially fretless, and they sell for only a few hundred dollars used.
