I've got hold of an Epi Black Beauty and planning a C5/59 combo bridge and neck, but what would be a good choice for the middle pickup???? C'mon guys, gimme a clue.

I am sorry I won't be of much assistant because I never experienced a 3 pups Paul, but I was wondering... Wouldn't a phat cat in the middle position bring a little airy edge to the middle position sound that would be quite interesting in comparison to the C5 and '59?

Just seemed like a good idea to me

I was going to suggest a Phat Cat too. Something totally different, and I bet it would sound really cool.

The Phat Cat is a cool idea. I was also thinking of suggesting a C5, 59b, and a 59n for that guitar.

I was thinking about the Phat Cat - thought it might be a cool idea....but, I also thought of doing a 'Frampton'; open pu's and gold rings.....maybe I shoulda put a poll up......:smack:

For the record - I do not own a three pup LP, SuperD's, Smoker, or otherwise. However, I will GAS for one until the day I get one. And assuming that I don't go all KISS on it, I'd like some tonal versatility. By that I mean a guityar where all three pups sound good on their own, and compliment each other in pairs - mid/bridge or mid/neck. So - here are the schools of thought:

#1 Just get another of whatever the neck pup is. This gives a neck pup at the middle tone, and mixes something not so boomy with the bridge pup. Obvious why to do that on an LP.

#2 Phat cat. This is the Monty Python "Now for something completely different option. Cool way to add fat to the bridge or cut to the neck.

#3 After much meditation, research, thought and a number of forum posts, I'll say get a Distortion neck. It runs at around 12K - more than a regular PAF style neck, and less than a hot bridge pup. Also, it's not too bassy, an will add awesome mids to any scooped tone pup. To me scooped is most paf styles and say a custom. The point is if the neck and bridge don't have mids, get something with them. If they don't have highs, get a Full Shred, if they lack bass, well you get the idea.

It's really tough to find the perfect pup to balance tonally, and powerwise, with the others. Still, I hink for something between a PAF and a Hot Bridge pup - the Distortion neck is the one. Try it and let me know before I do it - in case it doesn't work.

Don't forget there are various three pup control options including on/on/on also...

I too was gonna say Phat Cat too. I have never tried it for myself, but I read about people using it in the middle position all the time and they rave about it.

On my black beauty, I use a C-5/59n/59n. If the middle pickup has the poles closer to the fretboard, then the bridge and middle are like a normal LP in the middle position......the neck is electronically isolated from the bridge/middle.
So, a C-5/59n makes sense for the bridge/middle. You could use anything though. I've always pondered the idea of a Phat cat, but you won't ever be able to hear it on it's own, because it'll always be in parallel with the bridge, when the 3 way is in the middle pos.
