Epi Dot: CC and A2P? or else what pups?

Hi guys. I've just bought an Epi Dot, and I'm thinking about changing the pups. In this moment I'm not using this two: Custom Custom and Alnico 2 Pro (neck). (Besides i have a Custom and a Pearly Gates(neck) but those are in my Les Paul).:sigh:
So, I was wondering: Do you think those pups would work? (I mean the CC and A2P)

Thanks!!

i love the CustomCustom in my Strat. It's hot, yet vintage in tone, with tons of mids thanks to the AlNiCo 2. With the 60's Fender Strat singles, it's the ultimate 60's/70's hard rock guitar.

as far as i know, the A2P is supposed to be the "vintage alnico 2" flavor Duncan, and is really a logical choice for the neck position...if you want a more vintage neck tone, get the Seth Lover...or the Phat Cat so you could have those fat, creamy P90 neck tones and the crunchy bridge humbucker. you'd have a rockin, Queens of the Stone Age style axe.

it depends on what music your playing, those wouls be decent for rock, but good for blues and blues rock. for the best all-around sound, id reckomend a JB bridge and a Jazz neck.

I say try it, the worst that can happen is you don't like the sound....actually the worst thing that could happen is you find out that the F-holes are no fun to work with and you end up leaving the guts hanging out in frustration. But in reality I'm sure you'll find that it's a great learning experience and the pickups will sound fine.

LOL...

I play everything, but mainly rock. (like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Bad Religion, Guns n' Roses).

How hard is it to actually change out stuff through those f-holes? I've heard many people say it's not worth the hassle, but on the same end lots of people seemed to have accomplished it alright. I'm just geussing that you'd drop the pickups and and pull the wires through the f-hole, make the entire wiring "harness" outside and then just feel around for the holes to put the pots in and push the mess of wires trhough the holes into a place where you can't see em. It seems not to difficult and a complete pain in the ass at the same time

It just takes patience and attention to detail. When I've done it, I labeled the wires and pots for location and was careful not break any connections when I was returning the parts their respective places. You may have to rig up a "puller" to get the pots or the output jack back into place to compensate for not have squirrel sized hands. I found that some careful finger work was all that was needed for the pots, but the output jack being further away needed a puller (stiff wire run through the hole in the face, attach jack and pull to align it to the hole).

I'm sure Blueman335 can give better detailed instructions for working on f-hole guitar wiring.

The worst case is when your done you could have a cold solder joint and the wires will be visable through the "F" holes. I have seen it don dozens of times, but I won't attempt it. I don't have the patience, or the soldering skills. I just bring it to my tech. (who happens to be an artist with a soldering Iron). The aII will be great in this guitar. The Custom could be a little to hot. I would suggest wax dipping the pickups first. Semi Hollows have a tendency to howl at higher volumes with high gain. Waxing them will keep it in check.

It's actually easy and doesn't take long if you know a few tricks. I've probably rewired at least 50 F hole guitars, most with push-pulls. There's a bunch of old threads on this; if you can't find them, PM me for details.

I use 250K pots on my bridge PU's for warmth (or you can use a PU with an A2 or A3 magnet, like a PGB or CC), with 500K's on the neck for brightness. For 335 PU's my favorites are:

Vintage:
- pair of '59's
- Phat CatN/'59B

Modern:
- JazzN/C5
- 490R (with an A5)/498T (with an A4)

335's naturally have nice tones & it's easy to get hooked on them.
