Epi Flamekat/ allykat/ wildkat

Re: Epi Flamekat/ allykat/ wildkat

small bodied, light-weight guitars, decent sound and playability. The different models have slight variations from one to the other (pickups, bridges, finishes). I've played a couple at different times, but never owned one. I'd say buy one if it speaks to you. As far as Epiphones go they aren't the standard "like a Gibson only cheaper" types. The only thing that kept me from buying one was the body size. I'm a bigger guy and I like the feel of a big bodied guitar.

If you want a mid-size semi-hollow, this is an affordable way to do it. Like Sanford, I'm a big boy (6'5") and prefer a full-size 335, otherwise I'd have one.

As with any Asian HB, they'll need to be upgraded to get clear, deep quality tones. If you get the P-90 model, they'll sound better than the HB's (less for them to screw up), and you may or may not want to upgrade them. Maybe a mag swap will do it for you.

I've got a bunch of set-neck Epi's, and they're a good deal for the money. Upgrade the PU's, and they sound like a guitar that costs 2 or 3 times as much.

Re: Epi Flamekat/ allykat/ wildkat

I used to have an AlleyKat and it was a nice player. Bridge was a bit rough till i had it smoothed down. One neat part about them is that you get two volumes for the pickups, and a master volume to raise and lower the ratio you've set between bridge and neck pup.

There's a bit more air in the tone than in a 335 type...the area under the bridge and stop-bar is the only part of the inside of the Alleykat that has any wood...the rest under the pickups and around the sides is hollow.

With a SD vintage mini-bucker in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the bridge, it could be a serious tone machine.

I have been thinking about picking one up, found a nice Wildkat locally. I have always liked these guitars. Typical Epi issues with uneven fretwork and crappy electronics but a fret level and a tune-up and they are pretty cool guitars for sure.
