Epi Les Paul or Tokai Love Rock?

Re: Epi Les Paul or Tokai Love Rock?

All the Tokai ones I've played have been pretty good - tempted to get one actually. I'd really like to try one from the 1980s to see what that's like.

Re: Epi Les Paul or Tokai Love Rock?

I stand corrected, it seems that there were threats of a lawsuit and then a "gentleman´s agreement"... my bad.. ;)

In this case: Used gibson or a good Tokai... great guitars (I´ve played them, but until recently thought that there were licensing issues) ;)

That creaking sound, is the sound of your neck being wound in...

Whilst I own two Gibsons (both rare year 1980- RD 'Artist' & MV2 'Victory' models) and have owned a Gibson LP Std (1974 -CSB), all of which are/were very nice to play vintage guitars, my respect, or any perceived concern for Gibson the company, evaporated years ago. First when they kept getting into trouble for illegal tonewood sourcing and their general attitude to traders and players alike.

Gibson's management sucked, for most of the past several decades, which saw the decline of the dinosaur brand, thus losing sales to stronger competitiors, such as ESP, Fender, Ibanez, PRS (...all of which, I also own...) and or course, Tokai (...which I don't... Yet...). Later, even 'Chibsons' were being hailed as vast improvements over many Gibson offerings and the Epiphone LPs were often regarded as better than the budget LP stable - your 'Tributes' and 'Studio' and other spurious models that milked the stable dry.

Back in the early 80's, Tokai took the guitar market by storm. The standard of work on those early Japanese guitars, eclipsed much of what Gibson were producing, even back then.

But the nail in the coffin was the recent dispicable act of wanton waste, chordophonic butchery no less, perpetrated by Gibson, when they trashed (by catapillar vehicle) in excess of 350 'Firebird' X's. Aside from the appaling waste of tonewoods (maple, rosewood) and hardware/parts (they didn't even remove the pickups or machine heads!!), the act proved to me, that Gibson were totally irresponsible with the most appalling track record in environmental doctrine and inhumanity - Think of how many schools or social centers that might have benefitted being gifted these hapless instruments (?) And Gibson's excuse - 'Tax rightoff' !!! DISCUSTING policy.

GIven the state of the world and the onset of rapid climate change, DEFORESTATION through greed and fire, with the ongoing mass exinction event and the inevitabliity of civilisation collapse, with inept and corrupt politics ruling most nations now, who really gives a toss anymore whether Gibson are copied or not? Copywrite theft? LOL Do me a favour!

I applaud the Chins for doing whatever they can to undermine the US economy... Serves the US right, for dropping the ball, or meddling in affairs, that in all honesty, should not concern them. Maybe then, the US ciitzens will start thinking about the REAL issues in the world and regarding the migration of displaced humans and dying species and their own greed.

SO to the OP - With the above concerns in mind... I've always been a firm believer in recycling. Especially guitars. The world is FLOODED with guitar brands and used and often forgotten instruments, lying in bedrooms, attics, basements or garages... So I would certainly suggest you look for a used Gibson LP if that is what will only floats your boat... Even ueed Tokais, ESP's or single-cut PRS's are pretty affordable (though PRS core models, do seem to hold higher used values).
