Epi Les Paul pots

I want completely replace the electronics on my newly purchased used Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top and I read on a thread somewhere that the Epi's use the short shaft pots instead of the long-style used on a Gibson Les Paul......any comments out there? Thanks........

Re: Epi Les Paul pots

That, Sir, is a fact, I do believe. All the ones I have replaced I used short shafts, or got the short shaft....:laugh2: Yeah, that's it, short shafts.

Oo-er!

Seriously, the pots on my Epi Black Beauty are the one bad thing about it. They're complete crap, spongy and don't seem to do much other than turn things on and off. Binary pots if you like.

You're doing a good thing replacing them, I would do it myself if I didn't just turn it all up to ten anyway. :)

Re: Epi Les Paul pots

funny...the pots that came with my epiphone vintage g400 are one of the best i've found...

Re: Epi Les Paul pots

Haven't totally decided on which Seymour Duncan pups, but will use CTS pots, Mallory 150 caps and Switchcraft switch and jack. Am looking for Zeppelin meets Allman Brothers type sound.....probably Alnico Pro ii bridge and Jazz neck. Am interested in what others have used in their Epi's given any tonality difference between Epiphone and Gibson Les Pauls (if any) for a
Classic/Souther Rock sound..........

You, my friend, will be looking for a long time. If you ever find that tone, you patent it and sell it - you'll be a rich, rich man. But in all honesty, I would go for an A5 overwound PAF for the bridge, something like a '78 with A5 or a PGb with A5 in it. As for the neck, for that sweet, singing sound, it's hard to beat A2, but it might be too muddy for you. If I were in your shoes, I would just get the Pearly Gates set, and practice until I was blue in the face. Because pickups, amps, guitars, those will only get you to the doorstep. Technique will be the difference maker here.

Re: Epi Les Paul pots

I have run into to some EPI's that the short shaft pot threads will not quite reach through the wood and the nut can not be installed. OTOH on some the shorts install just fine. Unless you are wanting a vintage look in your control cavity I suggest just going with the long shaft pots. That way you know for sure they will work plus wiring them up is easier since you don't have to reach so far down in the cavity to do your soldering.

BTW, we make up LP wiring kits if you are interested ....

Re: Epi Les Paul pots

I'm going to the Columbus, Ohio guitar show in a couple of weeks and am trying to come up with a shopping list.....my main stage guitar is a Tele (been playing in Classic Rock/Blues bands for around 40 years) but always wanted to have a Les Paul around just to fool with. Had a few nice ones "back in the day" but really just looking for a project to play around with and do some home recording.....maybe play out with it a little (till I get tired of carrying it!). Am enjoying the feedback....keep it coming.
