Epiphone 1967 Flying V...Talk to me.

Anyone have any experience with the Epiphone 1967 Flying V? I'm seriously considering one of these as a fun/crunch guitar to compliment my Strats. I don't want to spend a ton of money, it has to look cool, and it needs to get crunchy. This looks like it will fit the bill. Anything I need to look out for? How are the stock pups? Can you recommend some good replacements for it? And finally, what are all the controls on it? I'm used to Strats and their 5-way switches. This would be my first Gibsony guitar. Any advice appreciated.

Very easy playing guitar(as long as your standing). I recorded with one. I think I used a Dimarzio PAF Pro in the lead spot. If I had one now I would put a JB and '59 combo in it ( a little bit warmer sounding). Not a bad guitar for the money although Gibson V's can be had fairly cheap as well. Stock Epi p\u tend to scream at high volumes. Hope this helps.

It does indeed. Thanks for the insight. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it this weekend. I'll give the stock pups a chance but I think I'm leaning toward a Custom/'59 combo. I have a JB in an alder guitar now and it's a little midrangey. I'll be going for something a little meatier with more lows on this guitar. Thanks again!

Vs are fun to play. I've got a Full Shred in the bridge position of mine, sounds killer.

I had an older type Epi 1967 V with just one volume and one tone knob, all black with a creamish pickguard. A neat crunch guitar but didn't really cut it for clean tones - they lacked body. I retrofitted mine with a Gibson 496R in the neck and a 500T in the bridge and it sounded very cool. it's now a couple of years since I sold it, and being, ahem, wiser I would now put a Duncan Custom in the bridge. But the 496R was just perfect in the neck slot.

My only concern was that the neck joint is not one of the strongest I've seen. But I treated the guitar well and it never gave me any problems.

Funny thing: some of my bandmates are pretty conservative and when I first took the V to a gig they said, "Ha-whatcha gonna do with it, smash it?" They couldn't imagine that I meant that guitar for real, let alone believe that I really liked the shape of it.

I agree with Thurisarz i have one now for Drop C tuning and it is good for playabilty but the pickups are **** ..... I am talking abt the old version with one Volume and Tone knob ehehe the new one sounds as if it screams ... must be that they fitted the gibson pickups in it not really sure. The Epiphone V 1967 has a better playablity then my Jackson .... Some how the Jackson's neck is to thin for my liking some times .....
