Epiphone Biscuit

Against my better judgment, I tried out an Epiphone Biscuit reso today. I was actually really impressed. It's without a doubt the best resonator under $1,000 I've played to date. Maybe the one I tried happens to have really excellent wood, because I've played quite a few terrible Epi acoustics in the past.

Here's what set it apart from other budget resos I've tried:

- Full, fat tone, not too shrill or clanky.
- Loud!
- Good action
- Stayed in tune, and had good intonation
- No buzzes or rattles

I tried a similarly priced Fender spider wood-body reso to compare ... not even close. The Fender sounded dead, quiet, and made a really bad "clank" sound on some notes. It almost sounded like it was put together wrong.

At $350 for the Epi I may just grab one. At the very least, it will tide me over until I can afford a really premium reso like a Paul Beard. I've been wanting a biscuit resonator for years and this may be just enough to get my fix. Heck, I could get a Beard cone and a piezo pickup for it and still come in under $500.

Re: Epiphone Biscuit

I tried one out last year ... it sounded great ... went back the next day to pick it up and it was gone. I was very impressed. Still think I might get one some day.

I'm not a fan of Epi actually ... but I know what I like w/o having to rely on the price tag. Yep some guitars aren't worth their price and some are worth more. Sorry Jerry but it's true. :D

1. If you can't get it through your skull that different specimens of the same species of wood have different tonal properties, that's your problem, not mine.

2. Thanks for recommending a guitar you openly admit to not have any interest in ... that's really helpful.

3. I don't play slide very much either - I just like the tone of resos. They're great for fingerpicking.

Re: Epiphone Biscuit

Ok guys. Ive taken this antagonist thing too far. I personally dont see how ther would be that much of a tone difference between guitars of the same species produced within the same factory using the same production methods, but I wont mention it again and I apologise.
Ive heard this Brass reso is a good deal and sounds pretty good fingerpicked also. Action not too high or low. 299.00 is a prety fair price for it it seems.
Ive heard its made real well and is a pretty good value.
It sure looks cool. Might be something to consider if your gonna upgrade anyway, you'd have a brass guitar also in the end.

Re: Epiphone Biscuit

Go ahead and mention it. But the above paragraph leads me to believe you've never played two of the same guitar in a guitar store before, especially acoustics, as I assumed this was the most obvious thing in the world to most players... the same model of guitar can largely vary in weight, playability etc....

Then again wasn't it you who was saying that Fenders arbitrarily all became bad somehow during and after the CBS period? In those stages, construction and wood species was largely the same, but somehow there is variance according to you...

You areant going to find enoguh variance to make any substantial difference with production guiatrs useing the same assembly line and woods. Thats my story and OIm sticking to it. I think a lot of you dont like that cause you think you really found an extra special one -someking of dimaond in the rough or something.

70's strats are well known dogs.okay, in general . In the 80's the quality became good again and supposedly the 90's /late 90's were some of the best. Evidentally they are really starting to crank somne consitantly good quality American Std.s out again.I shot my mouth off and said they suck which was indeed stupid. They are good guitars. Not great, but very solid and good guiatrs, if somewhat bland tone-wise IMO.
Thats about all I know. I still maintain early 70's 4 bolts and 60's are better instruments than any pre-CBS or late model American Standard.
Ive heard the Custom shops are about on a par with those Pre-CBS Strats and early 70's 4 bolts.
Its my opinion that you arenet going to find any signaficant variance in tone quuality within the same line of guitars produced on an assembly line using the same wood and the same manufactureing techniques..especially electrics..I think some of you dont like to hear that cause you think you found a diamond in the rough or a rare gem hidden amongst the slag or some such nonsence. Thats my opinion and go ahead and calssify me as an imbecile. I wont have any hard feelings at all.

Thats my final comment on the subject.

Re: Epiphone Biscuit

So what did you decide ... going to get the Epi? :cool2:

I'm giving it serious consideration. I was trying to save up for a nice Strat or maybe one of those Carvin PRS clones, but I already have four nice electric guitars and zero resonators, so ... hmm ...
