Against my better judgment, I tried out an Epiphone Biscuit reso today. I was actually really impressed. It's without a doubt the best resonator under $1,000 I've played to date. Maybe the one I tried happens to have really excellent wood, because I've played quite a few terrible Epi acoustics in the past.
Here's what set it apart from other budget resos I've tried:
- Full, fat tone, not too shrill or clanky.
- Loud!
- Good action
- Stayed in tune, and had good intonation
- No buzzes or rattles
I tried a similarly priced Fender spider wood-body reso to compare ... not even close. The Fender sounded dead, quiet, and made a really bad "clank" sound on some notes. It almost sounded like it was put together wrong.
At $350 for the Epi I may just grab one. At the very least, it will tide me over until I can afford a really premium reso like a Paul Beard. I've been wanting a biscuit resonator for years and this may be just enough to get my fix. Heck, I could get a Beard cone and a piezo pickup for it and still come in under $500.
