Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

I am planning to change the pickups on my Dot. If you have changed pickups on a Dot would you be willing to post some hints and instructions for changing the pickups. At first glance I am suspecting it may be quite difficult.

Re: Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

Depending on your dot, mine came with little plastic push-fit connectors which meant that you didn't have to take all the pots off and feed them out thru the f-hole just to remove the pups.
sadly, I went for some gfs 4-conductor ones and modded the circuitry with a series/parallel/coil tap switch so everything had to come out anyway.
Takes patience and a steady hand, and maybe a little gynaeocolgical training.

Re: Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

welcome

tie off some dental floss to the components and feed it through the holes to facilitiate getting them back in place

are you going with 2 wire or 4 wire new pups?

reusing the pots or new ones?

tell us more, we'll help more

Re: Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

Thanks for the replies I am planning to use a set of Epi US made 50SR and
50ST pickups from an elitist dot , I don't have them yet so I'm not sure if they are 4wire or 2 . I plan to keep the existing pots if possible.
If the pots have to come out through the f-holes do you desolder them then pull the wires back with the pickups? Do you have to pull out the input jack and pickup switch as well? Thanks for any help I really appreciate it.

You can carefully guide the whole assembly up thru the f-hole once the pups have been pulled off. The 3-wya toggle has to come off, but the jack is on a long wire and would be an absolute nightmare to get back in, so keep that in place.
The tip from T4D is really useful (I did that too) really helps get the pots back in place again if you tie the end to a bit of string or strong thread threaded thru the respective holes.
Note: If you are going to the effort of doing this, if any of your pots are a bit loose or crackly, take the opportunity to switch them out and upgrade, its worh an extra few $$'s while the dot's under the knife.

Re: Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

I have done pickup and pot changes on several 335 copies.

Al is giving good advice about changing the pots (CTS brand are great pots) while you have the wiring harness out of the guitar.

The last one of these I did, I used solid core wire of about 22 guage rather than string. Worked well for me and I didn't need to leave the wires through the "f" hole to the pot holes/switch holes as I could bend it to "arc" through once I was ready to install pots, etc. Worth considering.

If you need to do the input jack, tear apart a 1/4 inch plug and solder a heavy guage (like 14 guage..from house wiring) piece of wire to the jack (you only want the 1/4 shaft part for this) so that it will fit through the hole in the guitar body. Then put the plug through the hole for the jack and out through the "f" hole, put on the plug into the new jack and pull it into place. Slide the nut down the wire and fasten the jack. Remove the plug. The jack is a very important part of the signal path and a new one should be considered. IMHO

I made one of these for my friend who repairs guitars at our local music store and it has saved him a lot of time and frustration.

Swtchcraft makes excellent jacks.

Let us know how it went.

Re: Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

I changed the pickups out this morning and it went pretty smooth took about an hour, the dental floss idea was invaluable. I was genuinely surprised it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I also put a tusq nut and a tortoise pick guard on it, now this is one sweet guitar. Thanks for all of your help!!!

Re: Epiphone Dot PU Replacement

Cogratulations..Glad that all went well.

Did you put in a new jack?...that can be a bit of a pain.

How do the new pups sound?

The tone you had hoped for?
