Epiphone Dot Studio Video Demo

Re: Epiphone Dot Studio Video Demo

cool review! yours sounded alot thinner(in a good way) than mine did when i had the stock pickups, but it was probably the amp. anyways i like the demo, it really showcases how versatile it is.

Yeah, I wanted to show that with a few tweaks of the knobs the guitar can cover a lot of territory.

I am certain that a lot of the brightness captured in the video is related to the proximity of the microphone to the guitar --- a lot of the pickstroke was captured, regrettably.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studio Video Demo

Thanx . . . there goes my semi-GAS again !
Good review too ! Congrats !

Any thoughts on the Epi Shereton II ?
Same PU's as the Epi Dot ?
What is a GOOD used price for a 10 year old model ?
Thanks !

I'd say the Epiphone Sheraton II is roughly twice the guitar that an Epiphone Dot Studio is. It's a lot more like a real 335. The Dot Studio has a simplified control layout (MV, MT) and the jack is on the butt, not the top of the guitar.

As far as I know (and have read) the pickups will be the same between the two guitars --- but the Sheraton II has covers on the pickups which will mellow them oh-so-slightly. AlNiCo classic humbuckers in both as far as I can tell, though. As mentioned in the video, if the stock Epi humbuckers are so terrible, then I must be terrible, because I rather like them.

I'd say you could get a 10 year old Sheraton II around $300 --- that's about the least amount you can really pay for any guitar that's worth a darn.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studio Video Demo

The Sheraton tends to be fancier: binding, abalone inlays, block positions markers, more ornate headstock. The "gold" hardware tends to tarnish to a silvery color. The original stop tail-piece on mine got some pitting in the gold plating after I stupidly over sprayed some string cleaner...so careful there. Overall I've been happy with my Sheraton (mine is in "natural" which comes off as a yellow color after many bar gigs). As for playability, I dig it. The neck has a sort of wide-but-not-a-shredder feel to it, the back contour is a little odd as well. The back of the neck is rounded until you get to the center of the back, then it flattens out. My hands are a little large, so maybe it fits right for them. ::shrug::

Oh! The pickguard rattled something fierce when I got the guitar and I couldn't isolate the rattle or cancel it by tightening the screws, so I just took the dang thing off--looks better without it anyway. The strap button is at the neck heel, which caused my guitar to want to point face down (I think the beer gut helped there), so I repositioned the strap button to the upper horn. No tricks, just screwed it in carefully, watching for splits in the wood. No problems since '91.

Re: Epiphone Dot Studio Video Demo

you know what i always do to cure floorward necks is not to move the neck heel strap button, but the one on the bottom of the guitar. on my dot, instead of being in the middle, is in the upward side of the center-block rather than in a hollow part.

I have a early 2000's Sheraton II in ebony, and like it a lot. Well made and looks elegant, like a Lucille. Put a C5 in the bridge with a '59N and installed the Jimmy Page system.

I also like the Dot Deluxe, which has a flame maple top & gold hardware; basically a Sheraton with dot inlays (a few Dot Deluxes have block inlays). The wine red version is gorgeous. Look for deals online on used ones. I got my red one for $250 & a sunburst for $215, and both were almost like new. Upgrade the PU's and you have a great-sounding and great-looking guitar for a small investment.

x2, If you can find a used Dot from one of the higher lines (not Studio), I'd recommend that.

I bought mine on a whim, I wasn't really officially guitar shopping, I just played it and liked it so much I had to take it home.

If I had been "shopping" I'd have preferred a higher line model.
