My Studio is the same age... and I am 100% that it is a much more sound instrument than the brand new models. Different tuners, and I believe the TOM and Tailpiece are different makes as well.

Do the studios have kluson tuners now instead of grovers?

Re: Epiphone Elitist vs Gibson Studio

i would say gibson as long as the current studios feel as good as my 15 year old studio. it is kick ass and i wouldnt trade it for a thing. the finish isnt in perfect shape, and its had a refret, but i havnt played a LP that i like more.

i dont buy new anymore anyways, new guitars just dont have soul

Re: Epiphone Elitist vs Gibson Studio

I'd go with the studio, but one that you've checked out and know is in tip-top shape. The studios tend to vary a lot, but when you find a good one, its good. Helps the resale value to have "gibson" on the headstock too.

Used studios are the best deal, my 14 year old LP studio lite sings like no other. needs a fretjob now though...

Re: Epiphone Elitist vs Gibson Studio

my vote goes to the gibson since its a gibson and only a gibson. Laying wise both seem to be on par with one another but the simply fact that its the "real name" and not the lower brand of the two i would deicde on a gibson. NOt get me wrong i lvoew the epiphones but for the price they are asking for, i would not agree to pay.

Re: Epiphone Elitist vs Gibson Studio

I disagree with the finishes comment, actually... I played a Gibby studio in a sort of wine red finish, and I really liked the look of it. Mind you, that was only one, and I don't know what the quality control is like. Whereabouts are studios made?

Re: Epiphone Elitist vs Gibson Studio

I own a Epi Elitist Les Paul Standard Plus, and that thing is THE most gorgeous sound i've ever heard in my life. WAY better value than a Gibson, almost no difference in tone either. I did want to swap out the pups for some SD's, but i really don't want to alter the sound at all, its amazing, who knows, i still might. If you ever buy a gibby studio over a Epi Elitist, i will personally come to your house and slap you. Epi Elitist LP = awesome!!!!

I agree. The Elitist pickups sound really good. It just so happens that they are Gibson pickups made here in the US and then shipped to the Japan factory to be installed. Gibby pickups with the Epiphone name on them. And I think they are similar to the 57 classics. I read that on a spec sheet somewhere.

I also have a standard plus...what a killer les paul. I called Gibson the other day, they said the bridge is actually the same (or is) the 498t alnico 5. i like it. I just picked up a sweet edwards LP with duncans also. Its nice knowing you found something great and didn't get raped on it, isn't it..?

Yeah, I just got an Edwards :), got raped for £100 on customs but it was worth it, in fact, I change my vote from Studio to Edwards! (Check out this thread if you want to know why https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=41642)

Welcome BTW!

Never owned either, but played both of them in the shops and can say the advantage is clearly with the Elitist. Play one unplugged and you just feel it resonate. Wonderful workmanship, and I've liked the tops I've seen - the Standard Plus Elitists are something to behold.

But let me throw in a monkeywrench: the Japanese made ESP Eclipse 2s beat them both. Superior sound and playability. Wait till you feel the weight of that thing on your back - about 7 pounds and a nice tummy cut. Awesome sustain, very smooth fretboard, superior woods, bone nut, Sperzels, and they will be shipping with Duncans this year.

Incredible guitars...if you can get one. Musiciansfriend says they're sold out until 2006.
