Epiphone G-310

Hi All,

I just picked up a used Epiphone G-310 for a great price. I know it is going to need set up and modifications. Grover tuners are on the top of the list so the darn thing will stay in tune. The next part is where I need your help. Please review and suggest what you think would be best.

I need this Guitar to be very versatile. Please suggest wiring and pick-up suggestions. Also, a good place to send it to get the work done. I live in Sidney Nebraska. Omaha, Denver and Cheyanne are the closest big cities.

Welcome to the forum.

How old is your G310? This will determine exactly what pickups will have been fitted as stock. I am not going to suggest any replacement pickups.

A machinehead upgrade might help with tuning stability but I would begin with the top nut and the bridge saddle sections.

If you have the guitar to hand, carefully unscrew the control cavity cover plate. Inspect the controls. Recent Epiphone electric guitars use a PCB and block connector wiring system. Epiphone pickups on this type of wiring harness may prove worth leaving in place.

The majority of SE Asian Epiphone electric guitars use budget pickups from Korea or China. These usually leave much to be desired. Like this...

I will get the Guitar between 7/12 and 7/21. Just shipped today to Sidney Nebraska from Pennsylvania.

I got the thing for 125 delivered.

I'd leave the guitar as-is for now and save up for a better sounding amp.

If that a 310 it looks like the pickups have already been changed. They usually have open coils.

HELP.... I just purchased an abused SG-310 that I'm bringing back to life. I want to replace the neck. Any suggestions or neck replacement recommendations. Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Most likely, they use a custom heel and mounting for that neck...I'd search for another abused G-310 and transplant the neck.

Epiphone G-400's are worth investing a little into, but I would not sink too much money into a G-310. You can still get some pickups for it, because they can be transferred to a new guitar later. I rather like the pickups that came in the older G-400 SG's. If you take the covers off and remove the wax off the top of the bobbins, they sound pretty good. You can get a set off E-bay for under 20 dollars occasionally. You definitely need a good amp to go with any guitar. I liked the older Vox modeling amps like you described, but I think the Fender Mustang series out performs it. I like the Mustangs from one generation ago with the silver grill cloth.
