Epiphone Les Paul tradional pro

Re: Epiphone Les Paul tradional pro

This comes up a lot. It seems that to some people, in order to have any understanding of guitars, pups, magnets, and all the associated electronics involved, they need to be a fantastic player and post clips of their playing. Somehow, playing ability is supposed to translate to knowledge...or at least adds credibility to your knowledge.

But, if I were in an accident tomorrow and lost the fingers on my left hand (God forbid), I wouldn't be able to play a lick. But it would have no affect on my knowledge or experience, and I would still be able to contribute to this forum. Don't ask me (or anyone else) to post clips of playing in order to justify my comments.

I personally would love to hear clips of all of the forumites playing. Not necessarily to judge their knowledge by, but just to hear them and get to know them better. I have heard clips of some of you that make me want to never play again because by comparison to me you are sooo amazing. I have heard clips of others that play so "bad" (meaning that they've got a lot of practicing and improving to go yet) that make me feel like maybe I will keep playing after all.

But this is a forum/venue mainly for discussion, helping, learning, understanding, and fun (that's not to say that clips can't help achieve that purpose)...not for showing off.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul tradional pro

I have to say one more thing...

Bob and Rick, I have appreciated both of your contributions to this forum over the years and respect neither of you more or less for having your own opinions about the topics discussed (even when you totally "disagree" with each other...to put it mildly). I don't always agree with each of you, but I greatly respect and appreciate both of you and your posts and I have learned sooo much from each of you. So keep up your good work here.

Oops, there I go on my soapbox again.

That was well said. Let's call it a podium, not a soapbox.

The real issue for me is when we start blending "Opinions" with "Facts" and when we start confusion our "Individual" experiences with "Generalizations."

For a number of people - a tonal opinion based on their individual experience can quickly become a fact supported by the masses. And presenting information like that is what I am against.

That's the thing, though. Almost all of what we talk about here is preferences and likes. Tone is subjective. We play different kinds of music with different guitars, have different guitar heroes, use different amps, like different PU's, etc. There are very few absolute black and whites. Both Bob and Doc like a big difference in EQ between bridge and neck PU's. Not everyone else does. Right off the bat we're starting from different perspectives. Still no reason to get in heated discussions over it.

I like to talk to guitarists during breaks at live gigs, even festivals sometimes. Some of the best players I've met have no idea what PU's are in their guitars ('The stock ones'), and while I'd love to get lessons from them, I wouldn't go to them for advice on PU's, electronics, wirings, etc. They're not into those details. Their eyes glass over when I try to talk those kinds of things with them. I don't care how good or bad a player anyone here is. I wouldn't think any more, or less, of them. It's not relevant. I don't care if Bob is a great player or a hack; it has no impact on anything. As long as he's happy with his gear and tones, that's all that matters. I like different music and different players than he does. Neither one of us is 'right' or 'wrong.' It's preference.

There's no reason for people have to lose their temper and personally insult others when someone else isn't thrilled about their favorite PU's. When someone says they don't care for Seth's, I don't question their playing ability and demand they post clips. I don't care whether they're a beginner or a pro. It's what they like or dislike. I happen to think Seth's are one of the great PAF's. Not everyone agrees, no need for a knock-down fight. I don't need to be surrounded by 'yes' men. The childish tantrums and lashing out that have happened here over a few PU's is embarrassing. It needs to stop. There's no reason to try to tear down someone personally over a difference of opinion. I'd like to think we're all adults here and could talk gear without the veins on our heads bulging out.

I only question the need for a pickup swap at all because the OP said he likes how the guitar sounds. If he likes it now, why change anything?

Try a '59 with an A4 or a UOA5, and in the case of the latter, swap out the fillister screws for hex heads. You will be surprised by the changes.
