Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

What if I did this. Could I get a good sound? I have a mexi strat with Duncans and I absolutely love my sound way better than a lot of American Strats.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

I would say yes, depending on what guitar it was. Is it a high-end or low-end epiphone? Is it made of mahogany or alder? Pickups improve tone and duncans are great. But, it depends on the quality of guitar and wood/pickup combo. For instance, a JB/Jazz combo sounds amazing in a mahogany-bodied Les Paul-style guitar. Neck joint types are an important factor for sustain, too.

A little more info would help.

Peace.

So if I get an epiphone, which one would be better--mahogany or alder? Which model is the best for epiphone?

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

If you want it to sound like a real Paul, you're going to need a mahogany body & neck. Alder is going to be brighter than mahogany.

Stay away from the Les Paul Specials and the LP-100's. Those are bolt on neck, alder bodied models. I'm not sure on the construction on the standards and the Customs, but they might be worth a look. Play as many as you can get your hands on.

If you don't mind a used axe, LP studios can be had used for around the $550 mark.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

I have an Epi LP Classic with '59n and a JB. The LP has a solid Mahogany neck and body with a solid quilted maple top and I'll put it up against ANY Gibson for tone and playability.

i have a epi lp as well. antiquity set with 9.4k bridge pup. sounds killer, still plays like a lp which isnt my bag. wish i had my sg back but i think i found a good washburn substitute so the ant set will go in there and the neck is more strat like so it feels better

The nice wide neck was the main reason I got my LP. Strat necks are just a little too narrow for my big hands and sausage fingers. :laugh2:

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

I would love and ebony epi les paul standard or a white les paul custom. I would agree that mahogany is best for paul tone.

Peace.

I agree with everything here, but the last remark. Studios can be found for less than $550, as that is usually the price of the Standards. Customs run for a little more...$559 I believe.

Anyway, you can totally have a rockin' axe with an Epi equipped with the right pups. You can't believe how much a SH-5b, SH-1n combo boosted my axe's growl!! Boy can my guitar scream! I love it to death. Thanks to Duncan.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

Short answer: yes. I had a epiphone lp standard for years with alnico II pro pups in it, and I loved the tone and feel. I had it professionally set up and maintained, and the guitar was great playing and a faithful companion for all the gigs that I was playing. I was a very happy camper with that guitar.

The longer answer is that I later replaced it with a gibson. But if an epi fits your budget, I think the standards and up are good values for the money and can be very good tone machines with the right pickups and setup.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

I got a sweet Epi Custom (made in Japan) with Duncan Jazz neck and CC bridge...it plays as nice as my old '70 LP Custom did, did'nt gig with it yet, but I love the tones, had real MOP block inlays put in and pro setup...plays like butta...looks damn nice too. Solid build and neck join, killer finish work, just flawless, but then, this was Japan built...big selling point IMO.

LP Custom here....mahogany body & neck. Changed out all the electronics & have a Custom-5 bridge/Pearly Gates neck. Covers all the bases from blues-classic rock-modern rock.

Play as many as you can because there are some dogs out there....BUT when you find a good one, it'll be a keeper!!!

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

i recommend the epiphone elitist LPs they have better quality woods and craftmanship(japanese have better work ethics which means more consistent quality) its the closest thing to a real gibby. or find a used gibson lp studio.epis are not bad but its hard to find a really good one specially those with solid colors you cant see the wood they used.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

I too own an Epi LP Standard and was also wondering which set of PUPs would be best. I play mostly hard rock (Metallica, Default, Alter Bridge, Creed, Velvet Revolver). I was thinking of a '59 in the neck and then either a C-5, Custom, JB, Distortion or Custom Custom in the bridge. Which set would give me some killer crunch while maintaining really nice cleans?

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

not sure about the regul;ar line of epiphones theier woods tend to be very shady on what they use. as it says on the site mahagony/alder..... but as there are a few good ones, liek the joe perry sig epiphone LP the zakk wylde LP and of course the elitist line as well as they use fairly good and REAL woods.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

Actually... all epiphones LP's are made out of a Mahogony/Alder laminate, just checked their site. But, today, I spent ALOT of time playing an Epiphone Les Paul Custom at GC. It sounded great, played nice, but, I think any Dimarzio, Fralin or Duncan pickup woulc improve it's tone by a large margin. I think the epiphone pickups sound pretty harsh, sound like ceramic magnets.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul w/ Duncans--Good Tone?

My Epi

When I was play testing a bunch of guitars, it was an Epi LP I picked out of the bunch. It just felt right in my hands. A new pair of strings and a truss rod adjustment and it plays like gold.

The stock pickups, switch, and nut suck, but none of them need to be replaced immediatly. Just budget for new pups and replace the other stuff as you maintain your guitar.
