epiphone les pauls?

hi tone bros and sisters,

what do u think abt epi les pauls? are they worth getting? kinda interested in the lp standards. i'm in no rush and keeping my options open.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

They are pretty good if you can get them at a reasonable price (ie. £350, $700). Might be worth changing pickups in them though, andd watch out for the pickup switch - they are notorious on Epis for breaking if you are too rough with them, so no Tom Morello-style rapid changing :)

Never played one myself, but my fave band in the world (Oasis) did in their early days, and I DO have an Epi 335.

Wot kind of music/amp would you be playing/using?

Jsr

Re: epiphone les pauls?

my amp is a marshall MG series solid state which i use for practice.when jammin i use a peavey (dun know the model), which belongs to a pal.
I play hard rock, punk and goth.

I'v tried playing an epi lp at the shop.It ok but i wasnt really serious that time. and heard alot abt the wood in the epi being "layered" not "one piece" as in the gibson lp. does that make a huge difference?

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I think the Epi Les Paul Custom can be made into a totally professional guitar by installing new pickups and doing a little fret leveling, polishing and careful set up work. Lew

Re: epiphone les pauls?

Pac112 i can tell you this about the Epi LP's:
I have customised several Epiphone LP Standard and other LP-models as well (such as the Goldtop '57 and the Custom), the stock pups are not much, but once replaced with the pups of your choice, the Epi's pump put great tone!! If you can get them at fair price (find a good dealer and you will!), they are defenetely worth bying. Simply upgrade with better pups, and you ll have a very fine guitar at low price! All the Epi's i ve seen were of descent quality, sure the Gibson are better, but not worth the price difference in my opinion. Nicely finished as well...
If you want to put the dots on the I's, you can change the nut and mechanics as well, does not cost you that much either and ll give you a real quality instrument.

Wow! Lew just beat me to it! :13:

Re: epiphone les pauls?

Yeah, my Epi LP Zakk bullseye feels after a pickup upgrade like a real guitar.
Never regretted buying it.
With Epi you don't pay for the 'name' like Gibson, so it is real worth the money.
Prices may vary from shop to shop, so investigate it first.
My LP was 699 euro, but I saw it for 800 euro too!

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I think Epiphone's are a crapshoot. Sometimes they're really good, sometimes they're really bad. Make sure to play a bunch of them before buying. Epiphone's quality control doesn't seem to me to be as good as people make it out to be.
You may want to consider a Yamaha AES620 since it's already got a SD JB in the bridge or a Fernandes Monteray model instead of an Epiphone, since both are high-quality Les Paul looking/sounding models.

Currently i'm playing a yamaha pacifica with a JB in the bridge. Plays well, love the neck. But for the next guitar i was thinking i wanna try something different other than yamaha.

Its kinda hard to find a Fernandes , isnt it?

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I really like my Epi. I did replace the pups (of course), and I now need to replace the notorious pick up switch. Beyond that its been great, even came with Grover tuners, which I also replaced with Grover locking tuners. Its a great guitar and with the upgrades much cheaper than lots of axes that are way overpriced imo.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I have an Epi Sheraton. While it doesn't adhere to the traditional Gibson formula for a 335, it still feels, looks, and smells great, and after a pickup change, it's one of the best sounding guitars I have.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I think you aboslutely are paying for a name with an Epi. That name might not be "Epiphone," but you're still paying for a name: Gibson. I used to have a Sheraton II. It was okay. I could never find anything about it that relaly grabbed me, though, so I ended up selling it. I have since been much more impressed by similar models -- even in stock form -- from brands like Ibanez, Samick, Jay Turser, Austin and Agile. And those were all less expensive and many of them had noticeably nicer components.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I have an Epi LP Standard and after a pup change (Screamin' Demon and Pearly Gates) and a setup, it's a good backup guitar to my Gibson and Gordon Smith.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I have played several Epi LPs, i played one Custom that was very nice, and others which were ok. Im gassing for a LTD EC400AT though. Not exactly an LP shape but it played very well for the money and comes with Grovers, Earvana compensated nut (dunno if its any good) and chrome covered JB/'59s stock.

Ah...good to know. Yamaha makes excellent guitars don't they? Just wondering though, what model Pacifica is it?

As far as Fenandes being hard to find...you're right...I haven't found any. Apparently though, the Monteray Elite is supposed to be the bee's knees.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I play a Jay Turser Les Paul copy.
I actually like it a lot. Change out the pickups, and maybe a few other things and it does great, IMO!
It has a chambered body to reduce the weight and brighten up the mahogany sound a little, and with some seymours it sounds pretty good!

Plus, best part is, you can pick them up for CHEAP CHEAP, especially off of ebay.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

If you're considering Epiphone, then I suggest looking at Agile. I haven't played one, but the specs look good and they get good reviews over on the HC board. Plus they're around half the price of an Epiphone.

Unliked Gibsons, most Epiphones have maple necks as opposed to mahogany, and alder caps as opposed to maple, though the bodies can be any combination of mahogany and alder with maple caps appearing among some higher level guitars. I've heard from one guy online that his epiphone has a maple cap and isn't a custom model, but alder looks an awful lot like plain maple from the side so who knows. They need new pickups, new pots, and new switches. I've had two.. a 7 string les paul, and an explorer. I put new pickups into both of them, and I like both guitars enough. They aren't Gibsons though. The maple neck is an obvious difference. The nice thing is that I've been able to strip them and sand them down so my hand is just on the wood sealer instead of millimeters of plastic. With Gibsons, you have a sticky nitro finish and a mahogany neck which isn't as robust as maple. Plus I don't have Gibson pickups in mine.... I have dimarzios, and part of the Gibson sound for better or worse are the pickups.

Yes Indeedy!!!!! I did the same thing to my epi goldtop and now it is a wonderful axe!!!
Here is what I did to it, Installed SD alnico pro II's, changed the pots to CTS pots, installed a new switch, leveled, crowned, and polished the frets, and made and installed a corian nut. Its hard to beat now.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I forgot about the epiphone elitist line... mahogany necks and bodies with maple caps. They don't offer any solid bodies with P90s however.

Re: epiphone les pauls?

I have a Gibson LP but last weekend at the music store I played an Epi LP for a while and I'll tell ya what, for a guitar that was'nt set up that guitar played great. I did'nt plug it in but for sheer playablility there was'nt a thing wrong with it. Very comfortable.
