Epiphone LP Black Beauty 3 wiring diagram

Re: Epiphone LP Black Beauty 3 wiring diagram

I think I remember that the original ones had 3 volumes and one master tone. It looks like there are other options now with push/pull pots.

If I remember correctly, the originals from the 50s & 60s had the standard controls, 2 volume & 2 tone, but center position on the switch gave you bridge & middle instead of bridge & neck. It was a cool tone, a bit punchier & brighter and ever-so-slightly nasal compared to standard bridge & neck. I think the third volume knob may have been a later evolution, but I also could be mistaken. It's been a long time.

If you add push-pulls to Neck and Bridge volume pots (ie for the humbuckers) you can (in any switch position) have either or both humbuckers in wired in series in pulled position to give you "single coil" sound (a la Strat).

Re: Epiphone LP Black Beauty 3 wiring diagram

I recently rewired my Black Beauty and took advantage of the Freeway switch which is a 6 way replacing the standard 3 way. Gives you total control of the pups. I wired up as 3v 1t and used push-pulls to also provide serial/parallel option for each pup. I have the wiring diagram for that if you're interested.

That's a great arrangement. Super flexible.

The 6 core shielded cable is the most difficult to get. Another forum member sent me a couple of metres. You only need about 2 feet. The forum member would not take payment but told me to pay it forward. If you get the Freeway switch and give me your address, I will send you enough 6core cable for the job. Gratis.

Thanks again GourmetSaint!

This is very kind of you! But I live in EU, therefore I would be more than happy to pay for the shipment costs at least, once I finally decide the set-up. :)

In order to decide, can I kindly ask you to list all the possible combination (as you would do) with the 6 way selector and 4 push-pull pots (i.e. excluding for the middle pickup)?

Re: Epiphone LP Black Beauty 3 wiring diagram

Ok. Without push-pull pots (ie keep originals) and use the 6-way switch and wire up as 3v and 1t you will get:
All pups in standard humbucker (parallel) mode.
Position 1: Neck only
Position 2: Neck and Bridge
Position 3: Bridge only
Position 4: Neck and Middle
Position 5: Middle only (or all three pups together if push-pull on tone pot is used)
Position 6: Middle and Bridge

Above are all the options for pup selections using Freeway switch.

The push-pull on the neck and bridge pup volume pots will add a different sound (single coil sound?) wherever these pups are selected. You can also adjust volumes for each pup to give desired blend.

Since your selected middle pup is not a humbucker, it is only on or off and therefore no need for push-pull on middle volume pot.

Ok, so at the end you suggest (as you said at the beginning) to buy the Freeway switch and use 2 push-poll pots for the neck and bridge HBs (in order to change from parallel to serial/single-coil sound) and to buy also 1 push-poll for the tone (to have neck, middle and bridge together in position 5), right?

Thank you (sorry, I am bit slow at figure out this new to me dimension of sound :) )!

If so, I will contact you by MP to discuss for the 6 core cable :)

Re: Epiphone LP Black Beauty 3 wiring diagram

Reading at this post (sorry about the cross-posting result), and given the fact that I am not sure that playing 2 Whole Lotta Humbucker with 1 Phat Cat together will actually give a good sound, maybe I could also think of using the push-poll pot of the tone for having out-of-phase sound between bridge and neck (being both the same HB model and therefore the sound is likely to be interesting) instead of playing all the three pickups together.

What do you think?

Many who have wired guitars for the three-pickup-on option say they aren't fond of that tone and end up never using it. But the two humbuckers out-of-phase combination is pretty classic. IMO that's probably the more useful of the two.

Thank you! The difficult part is that I have non idea on how the guitar will sound after all :-)

+1. 6 coils at the same time? How can you expect any tone quality with that? It's like seeing how many clowns you can fit into a VW.
