Epiphone LPs

Re: Epiphone LPs

well, unless you spring 700 on an Epiphone LP, you're buying a slab of two pieces of mahogoney/alder laminate. Except the Goth... which is solid. Or, at least, according to all the literature I've read.

By the way, it was a joke.

Re: Epiphone LPs

dont believe on epi's brochures, literatures, and their website when it comes to wood used on their guitars (except elitists). they just use whatever wood they have. my flametop custom has a mahogany body, mahogany top, flame veneer and maple neck. some have real maple top, some have alder top. the lynyrd skynyrd LP suppose to have a maple neck according to the brochure but i saw one with mahogany. the lp bass was advertised to have an alder body and i saw one with mahogany.

Well, I must have just been real lucky then... I was told it would be mahogany body and neck with a maple cap and that's what I got. Imagine that, a company delivering on what thay advertised.

the only way you can tell is if you're disecting them or they haven't been finished... or the pickup cavities are unfinished... so, how do you know?

Do you know how to discern Mahogany from Ash or Maple from from Alder? Are you an arborist? What qualifies you at the ripe old age of 17 to differentiate one wood from the other. What are your credentials?

well, you can clearly tell the difference between a mahogany and alder and between a mahogany and maple if the guitar has transluscent finish. mahogany is far more grainy than both maple and alder. maple and alder is harder to differentiate though but if the neck is not grainy it is surely a maple neck, you cant use alder for necks. as for tops it is pure gamble or luck, you cant tell what wood it is without looking at the cavities in transluscent colors of course. but i think its either alder or mahogany i'm not sure if there was actually a maple top on some epi as i told earlier maple and alder is harder to differentiate but some swear they have real half inch maple top but never seen one myself, i havent seen that many cavities of epis.

I CAN in fact discern simple woods like Ash, Maple, Mohagoney and Alder and the likes... but, I'm no expert. I was simply wondering how he'd be able to tell so simply. I didn't mean to seem condescending or anything. But... I have a follow up question for him. How do you see the grains? I'm confused... most LP's have solid finishes on the necks and bodies, am I correct?

Re: Epiphone LPs

no. most lps have transluscent finish. all the sunbursts ived seen have transluscent finish except the joe perry sig. and the black burst i think which have solid colored backs along with the white custom and the black beauty.the gold tops have dark brown transluscent finished back.

Really... I've been around quite a few LPs... I've seen some with transclucent all around... but... I've seen a lot with opaque finishes on the back and necks... ah, well. Maybe we've each seen a differant breed of epiphones.

but most LP's come from the same factory... but, there are frequent line changes... so... ah, well. Don't think I'm being a jerk, I was just curious how you knew.

epi has 3 factories in korea and 2 in china. have you seen or played a real gibson les paul?

actually... the only real gibby's I've played are a slew of explorers, a few SG's, a few Jumbo acoustics and one flying V. I was never too impressed with those, so, to try and keep my illusions, I only try epi LP's and believe the gibbys are twice as nice, at least.

Didn't know about the 2 factories in china. I knew they had a few in korea. But, aren't the special models and the strat models built in the samick factory, too?
