Epiphone Neck Profile

symptom

Hi there. At the moment, I own 2 Epiphones: a Les Paul Standard and a SG G-400. I've been told that the Les Paul Standard has the 60 slim neck profile, but, then, what neck profile my SG has? The Les Paul neck is wider than the SG and, judging by feel, a little thicker too. For my small hands the SG is more comfortable.

Thanks!

Re: Epiphone Neck Profile

The G-400 necks from a few years ago were thicker than the current ones. Various versions of their Les Paul have thinner or thicker necks too.

Re: Epiphone Neck Profile

Forget their descriptions. Their necks vary between models, and sometimes within models. The Epi P-90 SG Special from a few years had a wide, thin neck; terrible, I sold mine. No girth to it. Too wide for small hands, too shallow for big hands. I got an Epi '66 SG (batwing) made a few years later that has a nice beefy neck, feels great (and much better tone from a thick neck). I think both may have been advertised as having a slim '60's neck.

The Les Paul is easier to do bends. But I think this is because the fretwear in my SG. The neck otherwise bother me. i have small hands and it's not easy to find a neck I'm totally comfort with. I love the sound of les pauls, but maybe they aren't for me, too heavy, to thick...

Re: Epiphone Neck Profile

My Worn G400 has the "slim taper" neck, it was built last year. It's very flat and wide compared to my ES-335 pro built in 2012.

Re: Epiphone Neck Profile

I think that the problem is to be "wide". That's the main issue with small hands for me, especially when bending.

Re: Epiphone Neck Profile

Have you tried the Strat with modified "V" shape. Very comfortable for small hands...much better than slim taper. It fills in the palm without feeling thick or too beefy like a LP 50's neck.

Re: Epiphone Neck Profile

When I took the Gibson factory tour (not Epiphone, but still) I was told that the tolerance for their neck shapes was 1/16th of an inch in either direction from the standard. That means that two necks could be as much as an eighth of an inch apart from each other in thickness.

So, yeah, what Blueman said. In general, most Epis I've played have tended toward the thinner side of traditional, but with a pretty different shape than the comparable Gibson models.

I think that over the years Epi has been all over the board with their neck shapes. My Epi Dot neck is closest to Warmoth's Fatback profile.

I have an early 2000's Dot with a mahogany neck that is the thickest neck I own, like a baseball bat. Not the norm, but there's a lot of variation in Epi necks. I suspect it's partially intentional so that everyone can find one they like.

Mine is '99 or 2000 . . . hmm. I wonder if they did bigger necks back then.
