Get a freakin Japanese Orville or Edwards .

We've got ourselves a winner! :D

That's the best route to go. Better woods and craftsmanship than Epiphone although if it comes down to low end Gibson vs. high end Epiphone, get the Epiphone (play a ton of them and you'll find some high end ones that are very nice).

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

but i think at the end of the day you gotta play the options you have and decide which plays well in your hands. its always goes down to that. no matter what you are comparing. just go out there and try em all.

Get the Epiphone Elitist series les paul. They run about $1000.00 for something that you would pay at least 2500.00 for if it said Gibson anywhere other than on the truss rod cover. The Elitist series Epi's are very nice.

Yes I played one in the store. It was a honeyburst finish - like the gibson LP classics. The pickups are american burstbuckers (Same as in american les pauls), and they sounded really really good. The guitar had great action - comparable to my Heritage. And sounded kickass. There were little binding gaps though (between the neck binding and the body - a little slit) But who the heck cares ?!?! After 2 weeks of playing live, the guitar is gonna be beat up already ...

So to answer your question - either the Epiphone elitist LP, a stock heritage 150, Edwards, or Orville.

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

I voted gibson, but in truth, the high end epiphone might be a good deal. But i am refering to the elitist line though. The gibson, still carries the gibson name for what its worth, and since im a gear snob i had to go with gibson. Although i think both are fairly good. IF i were you though i would save my cash and wait until you can get a higher end gibson.

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

Depends on which Type of model you want. SG, LP, or what ever. In anycase I much rather have a faded lp double cut in canary yellow over any of those high epi just because I rather spend 700 on a gibby rather then 700 on a epi. Or I rather just look on Ebay and find my self a tokai or whatever for cheaper then a Epi expensive model. When I tried those faded guitars I thought they were cool they just had that cheap ass finish, but its just the finish who cares! Its all about the sound and play ability.

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

Lower to mid end epiphones are crap. Um but then again low to mid end gibsons are crap too. But an Epiphone elitist is better than most gibson les paul studios and standards.

It's like choosing the lesser of two evils. I'd go with another brand personally.

xeromus, can u tell us about ur esp ec-1000?

I like it? It's not really a gibson copy or sound or feel like one, but that's also the reason I like it. ESP's quality control is incredibly good. You will see very few LTD terds and pretty much no japanese ESP terds at all.

For the price paid for the guitar you get SO much though. Sperzel locking tuners, Duncan pickups, Tonepros bridge and tailpiece, Earvana nut, very nice inlays and binding, nice top, and the neck/fretboard is probably the best feeling of ANY guitar I've ever played and that's the main reason I like the guitar so much. It's so comfortable and plays FAST! 24 frets also.

I like it.

Neither, in my opinion, they cost more than they are worth. I find Fender to be more on target for money for quality.

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

was asking cos i'm looking for an around 1000 bucks axe myself. has my eyes on the gibby LP studio until i saw the EP1000. hows the neck? is it thick like a gibby?
do u have any pics? i havent seen an EP in person. only the gibbies.

exactly what i was thinking

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

The real real expensive epiphones are a hell of a lot better that those faded jr. gibson lp's

Re: epiphone or gibson (yes, im serious)

I think it's a really bad move for Gibson to introduce such ****ty low end guitars. The entire mystique of Gibson is that they supposed offer the "best". They are only hurting their reputation by trying to introduce low end instruments. Look at how stuff like the MG series has hurt the reputation of Marshall. Isn't everybody wishing that Marshall would make plexi's for a decent price?

Lower end Epiphones aren't necessarily crap, and the higher ones can be lemons. I think it's more accurate to say that they need some work out of the box, and that you should be prepared for a maple neck and an alder body.
