I've been really interested in the new Epiphone Jeff waters v. It's his signature model, and I believe he plays it live. Is the quality of Epiphone really that good (it's about $500) or is his just set up well?

Don't know about Jeff waters but I know Rob Flynn of Machine Head had a epiphone sig guitar yet his personal guitars were built in the Gibson custom shop just with an epi tag

Oh I didn't know he only used gibsons, I thought I saw an interview where he said he used the epiphones straight from the factory. It was either him or Matt heafy who said that

LOL!!! Truth in advertising !! Wonder if all the endorser's get that?
Probo, first, you have to figure that any pro player is going to have the guitar well set up, regardless of brand. But Epi is making some good guitars too. And I have found that some of their limited runs that Ive had, seem to be very good. I believe Matt Heafy said he uses exactly what we can buy

In the end these guys are paid to play these guitars it's part of the contract. It's up to you to decide if a guitar meets your expectations of quality.
That being said the guitars coming out of the epi factory are pretty good and pretty consistent.

+1. The consistency of the Chinese Epi's (2003 forward) is much better than the 1990's Koreans. From the dozens of examples I've seen of both, Chinese are also better quality in most cases. They have full-size pots, Grover Rotomatics (no more no-name tuners), and a number of models have upgraded PU's, either Probuckers or Gibson/Duncan/EMG.

Try as many examples of the model you desire as possible. Buy the one that plays most nicely. Budget for pickup and control upgrades.

I've never liked the finish on Epiphone guitars. It always seems to be too thick for my liking.

Epiphones can be turned into pretty good guitars. The really low end ones are toys, not guitars. The standards on up are usually serviceable. They have cheap components, so the switches can go bad. If they have Grover tuners, they are pretty stable, the lower end ones are crap. The pickups, while not terrible in some models, can be improved by an upgrade to Duncans etc. I find quite a few that have a high fret or two. If you feel comfortable making a few mods/upgrades, epiphones can be very nice guitars. They can certainly be a great value compared to Gibson's current prices.

My latest Trad Pro LP is a fantastic guitar, needed nothing. I changed the pickups because I wanted a particular sound but the stock ne s were not bad at all.
Never played the guitar you're asking about but if it is decent then get it a pro setup and it should be a really solid guitar.
