Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

Got some clips up today of my Epiphone Valve Junior Head. Did them with 2 different custom cabs... a 4x12 with 25w Greenbacks and a 4x12 with Vintage 30's. Some cleaner takes with the volume around 10:00, some a bit more and then some gritty ones with the volume about 2:00 to 3:00. Sounded big and fat!

I changed out the tubes to JJ's. Have a JJ EL-84 (grade 37 - bit hotter than average) and a JJ ECC83S preamp tube. I added a tiny touch of reverb in ProTools just to keep it from being too dry. Lexicon plugin I believe. I didn't add any EQ, to be true to the tone. Used one standard Shure SM57 close mic'd, ever so slightly off axis.

The guitar was a heavily modded Squier 51. Has a Telecaster American Std Rosewood neck. GFS Liverpool in the bridge (splitable) and a GFS Fat Alnico in the neck all rewired far from stock. Got pics if any cares to see it too.

I was fortunate enough to have an old buddy passing through town today from Europe to play some badazz blues based rock through it. Granted he was just noodling while we chatted during the recording. Just real informal, but it is still way cool stuff!

His name is Jay Kaye (http://www.jaykayeband.com ) and he is the son of legendary 50s/60s guitarist Mary Kaye of that legendary Fender guitar, the Mary Kaye Stratocaster. Check out his band... just rippin stuff in the vein of Hendrix, Clapton and SRV all wrapped up in one!

So on to the clips...

If it doesn't position itself to Epiphone clips, just scroll through the amp names till you see it. This is sort of my little reference page of tones.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

Damn you Andy Z! Damn you!!!!!!!! Now I'm GASsing for one of those! Garrrr........

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

Dang. That sounds pretty darn good. That's perfect for blues/blues rock.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

how loud is it thru a 4x12? think it could compete with a drummer? I'm thinking one of these is exactly what i need.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

I'd use it for a real small gig without a PA if the band wasn't ultra loud, but is definitely giggable if mic'd. Stage volume shouldn't be that excessive anyway, no matter what. The 4x12 was surpisingly plenty loud! I haven't gigged with it personally. I got it for my recording studio mainly, but I'd gig with it if I had the opportunity and the right gig for it. Sounded great with my PODXT Live in front of it for FX with amp modelling turned off. Plus it has the POST EQ feature to shape the tone coming in if you need it!

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

Actually GearJ there are plenty of mod sites popping up now. My guy Paul Sanchez down at Red Iron Amps ( http://www.redironamps.com ) in Texas who used to work for Kendrick Amps/speakers, just got one to play with and has a series of cool mods planned as well. He makes low watt amps as well as this killer device called the Buffer2 for the POD and likes. I use that religiously now when I use only the POD for tracking. I was telling Dean Parks about this a few weeks ago and he's ultra interested now for all his POD type sessions he does!

Also Mercury Magnetics has an in depth mod now too...

Man with all the cabs you have too, this little dog sure could be some fun to you...

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

Thanks for posting all of those clips. The Epi sounds killer clean with the V30's. I like the dirty sounds with the Greenbacks. The V30 on dirty sounds kinda like someone took a knife to the cones? :eek13:

BTW, the JMP was my fave. Good stuff!

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

$200 for the mercury mags mod. A bit steep if you ask me...

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

I agree with the Mercury Mag is a bit high. Plus who knows really if it gives you more than a few percent better tone. I'd have to hear it in person to really be able to tell.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

I considered getting 1 of these combos for when I'm recording at home.

I never thought it'd sound as good as these clips suggest tho

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

Brow, don't forget that these are 4x12's, well micing one of the 12's, compared to a 6" or 8 speaker. You will notice a difference.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

I wonder what this would sound like with a good 1X12 loaded with a Celestion Alnico Blue! Think it would be worth the extra cost or would the Greenback be good enough? Open or closed would be a good question as well. I got the head too and it sounds okay but I've got to change out those tubes! Already tried a JJ 12AT7 and Electro Harmonix 12AX7 and it sounded better but I wanna get the JJ 12AX7 and EL 34.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

75LP I have the JJ EL84 and a JJ ECC83S. I've got a ceramic Weber 30w Blue Dog coming next week whcih I'll try with it in a 1x12 open back cab.

Yup, I do realise this :)

The head would be the better option for me as far as recording goes, as I could pair it up with different cabs with different speakers in :)

Cool. Can't wait for the review.

Re: Epiphone Valve Junior Head clips !!!

I listened to these the other day....Great clips! :bigthumb:

Cool little amp. I've played the combo 5 watter..considering the price?...impressive...def needed a new speaker and tubes...but I think the foundation is there.

And yeah the JMP clips was way cool (and a little unexpected for tone-style) as is your bray modded RI. All great tones, bro!
