Epiphone vs Gibson

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I agree with the Dot vs 335 that Gibson isn't justified in the price difference. However, I can't stand the way epi les pauls feel or sound.

Holy **** -

Let it be known, that in this fourteenth hour of this twentieth day of this fourth month of the year 2011 AD, I, Immortal J. Six, agreed with blueman335.

It was so, and it was good.

Peace on Earth, Amen.

I wonder if that will happen again? What are the odds? Out of 8,000 some posts, you found one of mine you like. I'm flattered.

I have my charm some days. This post caught me in a mellow, philosophic mood. That's not to say that next time I won't approach the subject with sarcasm and a few clever wisecracks.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

Blueman is right. Play the crap out of the guitar. Nobody will notice it all that much in the end.

It gets down to what really matters; what the listener hears when he closes his eyes. He hears the musician, not the company that made the guitar. When you're in front of a crowd or recording, pull out all the stops and put everything you have into it. Make them feel it and they'll remember you.

Wheres that one kid? Who was set on getting the Explorer made from plywood and bubblegum, even after we told him look for something else??:banghead:

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

It's like cars; buy what you like and what you can afford. What you play doesn't make you more important, or less important, than anyone else. High-end guitars don't make you a better player, practicing a lot does. The only ones who get hung up on brand names are other guitarists, but at a gig, they're only a few of the people in the crowd, at best. Please yourself, don't worry about them, they'll be fine. When you walk off the stage, all that matters is how you played, not what you played it on. Does anyone think that the crowd will be patting you on the back and buying you drinks, and saying: "You played like crap tonight boy, but we love that guitar of yours." But they will do that if you dazzle then with your playing, and it's totally up to you if it's a Gibson or an Epi that's you did it with. Whatever makes you happy.

I can hold my own with any of the local blues guitarists I've seen, and I play mid-priced imports, mainly Epi's. They don't hold me back. Music's in the hands and head, you just channel it thru a guitar, which is a tool, no more, no less. Pick the tool you're comfortable with and see if you can't impress people with what your hands can do with it. On it's own, a guitar is wood, metal, and plastic; in the right hands it becomes an instrument, and creates emotion and moods. It can't do that on it's own.

Damn. :usa2:

Well said! This could apply to A LOT of life's BS! :approve:

Slightly modified and still speaks the truth!

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I like my Epi DOT, a lot, and I agree with the OP, Blue, I6, et al.

Despite all this I STILL WANT AN ES-335?!!!!! I'm like a dog chasing it's tail: "I want an ES" - "But the DOT is good enough" - "I want an ES"

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I played 4 epiphone SGs in a guitar center one day around the start of the year. The first gibson faded SG faded I picked up after those was warmer, thicker, woodier, and more resonant than any of the Epis. So was the Gibson SG Special... so were the two standards... and the '61 Ri.

I really wanted to see if I could get back into Epi Les Pauls, started checking a few out. Every standard plus top I looked at (3 of them, anyways) had sloppy binding. it was a little disturbing, but I could get past it if I had to.
The Epi Plain and Plus tops were like the SGs, kinda dull and flat when compared to Gibson studios.

The Epi 50th anniversary Les Paul was much better than any of the regular epiphones, and held it's own against the regular studios. Epi IS capable of some bad-ass shizz.

You can make an epiphone a great player, there's plenty of dudes here who do that. They can sound great, but these days, I personally wanna hear the wood more, along with the pickups. With Epiphone, I feel like the pickups' character come through more than anything else. Especially with mahogany, I wanna feel that throaty, meaty growl and with Gibson I hear it more.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I think people get too heated with these debates. Basically Gibson is better than Epiphone but that doesn't mean Epiphone sucks. Buy what you what/can spend and just play. Don't think about it too much. If you want a bunch of EPiphones that's fine but if you want 1 or 2 Gibsons that's fine too. I personally don't care what people play as long as it sounds good.

The only thing I'd add is this: The only way to lose this game is if you spend more time on Internet forums defending your choice than playing it.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

I don't know about other Epis' , but I adore my upgraded Epi Zakk Wylde. Would never get rid of it. Plays great ( did have some work done) .. Its a heavyweight too. A ton of Mahogany and Maple.
it may not be the most 59 Les paul sounding guitar, but when push comes to shove, it flat out roars.
Once upon a time I thumbed my nose on such guitars..not anymore.

I've played some Epis that kicked major butt. The Les Paul Tributes (to Les Paul the guy) are pretty dang good.

Re: Epiphone vs Gibson

Gibbons are stupid, so are Epiphones...I just play two pieces of wood stapled toghether with rubber bands attached.

A good guitar won't make you a good player and nobody gives two f*cks what guitar you play, so just find something that looks sort of like a guitar and play it. Expensive amps are dumb too, I just plug into my portable AM radio, I mean, a good amp won't make you a good player so why spend money on it?
