I remember getting my first guitar back in the early 80's, which was a strat copy, and a cheap 12 watt solid state Marshall amp. That little amp had little to no gain, and at the time I had no clue that I might need a distortion pedal, or reverb etc. I could not figure out why I could not make it sound like Randy Rhoads' Crazy Train.

Looking back now, I could not have bought a worse guitar/amp combo for what I wanted to sound like, but I didn't understand that back then, and I had no one to ask about it. Can you imagine how blown away we would have been to have had a modern modeling amp back then? Kids today do have it made when it comes to usable and affordable gear.

Next time, I will tell the story of how the young me turned down buying a Silver Jubilee Marshall JCM 800 50-watt Combo a sales rep was suggesting... because the solid state Fender M80 half stack was "bigger" and cost the same...

I remember the Fender M series amps. I had the M80. Not a bad amp, but no way would I pass up that Silver Jubilee Marshall for it... Do you still own the Fender amp?

It's a tie for me.

Own a 2016 Squier VMJM, upgraded with a SJM-1 set, and a 2020 Epipnone Les Paul Special, upgraded with a SP90-1 set. Absolutely stellar tones from both guitars, and it comes to playability, both had nothing a professional setup and a few upgrades couldn't sort out.

Are they a direct contender, or match, to their respective Fender and Gibson counterparts? Of course not, but the € 1.000 difference to the originals is not justifiable in tones, feel and playability.

I voted Epi, as I have a few, but I do own 1 Squier. The Squier is solid from a fit and finish perspective. Relatively great action as well. Rivals my old Strat and my HM. It's unfortunate that 2020 kept me from bringing the Squier out in public.

Epi all the way, of the dozens I have owned and played I've only ever been unhappy with 2 of them, and 1 of them is my favorite guitar ever.
if I was looking for a $200 bolt on guitar, I'd grab a Jackson over a squire any day of the year.... Heck I'd rather play a pink daisy guitar than a squire.
