EQ or SD pup booster?

I'm thinking of getting the SFX-01. I already use a DOD EQ pedal for boost when I solo, and shape my lead tone further. However, this "resonance" thing of making single coil pups as fat as humbuckers had me thinking. Should I but it? Or would this be that one trick pony which only gets useful when I use my strat?

Thanks!

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

i think you'd be better off with a TS

it has the ability to warm up your tone a lot, and gives you more mids

IMO you'd find a lot more use for it

I have a good overdrive already - Guyatone Powerdrive - but it doesn't really thicken my strat's single coils that much. I was hoping the pup booster's "resonance" switch can do the trick?

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

A TS will add tons of mids and fatten it up. I haven't played with a SD booster yet. I've heard clips and I think it also may be a good device for you. Try one of those and a TS.

so a TS has that much mids eh? are there cheaper TS-type pedals? I've been hearing a lot about the bad monkey and arion tubulator.

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

I didn't think much of the SFX-01, a MXR micro amp or cheaper still a Marshall BB2 will give you a better boost in my opinion (I've has them all).

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

I have the old black Marshall Guv'nor pedal and I'm thinking of using this as a boost but never did play around with it as a boost before. I will A/B the guv'nor and DOD EQ this weekend. Thanks!

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

Do you think the TS is better for fattening a single coil than the pickup booster? How good is the TS-9?

I've listened to some clips of some cheapo TS's, and the Arion Tubulator sounds better (to me) than the TS7. Now, if only I can get one.

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

IMO a TS will not fatten up a SC like the SD Booster. If you already have an OD you dig try the SFX-01 .It will give you a few more options like a nice clean boost for leads or fattening up you SCS's w/o coloring them. That said ,its useless to me for my HBs guitar except for a nice lead boost.

yeah, that's perhaps the only reason why i want to try out the SFX-01 - fatten up my SCs while retaining that SC sound. i intend to use it only with my strat (my only guitar with a SC neck pup), and since it's true bypass, i wouldn't worry about keeping it in my chain of stompoxes while playing my "regular" metal stuff.

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

Keep your eyes open on HC or TGP ,I see people unloading them cheaply sometimes.I think they get it for the wrong reasons an arent happy with it.What it does it does very well.

The SD pickup booster is just lowering the resonant frequency to simulate a HB. That seems to be the primary objective of your request.

There's no reason (IMO) for a TubeScreamer, considering what you've already got. You're not going to be able to "add" frequencies to make your single coil sound like a HB.

i'm very happy with using my DOD EQ right after my Shredmaster when soloing... i tried my Guv'nor and Guyatone Powerdrive after my shredmaster, and my EQ beats them for the purpose... so, yeah, it's just "fattening" up my strat's SCs which i'm after with the SFX-01. So...

does it really "fatten" up a SC by lowering the resonant freq?

I buoght the Sd Booster and IMO it works great for me better than an Over Drive pedal 'cause it can maintain the same sound of your guitar solo without affect the clarity of it (just you have to place it after all your effect line not the first one)

listen to my clip and you could have and Idea how it works...

Re: EQ or SD pup booster?

I've not traced the audio path myself, but the schematic I've seen for the tubulator plus the components in the schematic all lead me to believe that it's the best tube screamer knockoff on the planet for the price. Values differ slightly, but the overall schematic is exactly like a tubescreamer. $13 and you can have a tubescreamer that to my ears is far superior to a stock one and easily on par with a modded one with NO TONESUCK. The only catch is the case is plastic (but it's still pretty tough and lasts longer than you would expect). I have some 1980's arion pedals that I bought on ebay. One is missing a knob, but they are all working fine with no problems.

The tubulator is without a doubt the best deal in pedals out there.
