Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

I love strats, I love my strat, but sometimes I wish that the neck pickup (antiquity texas hot) had more bass. I really don't want to change pickups because I don't really want to alter my tone. Anyways, will an eq pedal add more bass without changing the overall sound of the pickup?

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

EQ's sometimes add noise..... but what amp are you using that you are not getting enough bass out of a neck strat pickup?

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

the eq pedal should do just what you are looking for. start subtle or you will kill the tone you have now

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

I have a fender Bassman (original, 1967). The bass just isn't their, even with the bass cranked to "10".

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

sounds like it isnt the guitar but the amp. tell me more about the bassman, what speakers, tubes, mods etc...

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

Jeremy's right...an EQ pedal will boost whatever frequencies you want.

However, I'd still sell the amp and go shopping for one that has the sound you want.
Preferably, something with a closed back and 12" speakers.

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

If get an eq, I highyl recommend the MXR 10 band eq.

I think someone was selling one on the trading post...

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

That's interesting to hear. I have some ant tex hots in my strat and wish the neck was a bit brighter and chimier. Gotta be something with the amp.

Boss's eq is a nice one.

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

I played my stock MIA Strat through a bassman tonight and it was WAY TOO bassy...

check under the hood, something doesn't sound right...

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

An EQ pedal is an awesome way to customize your tone. You can do pickup simulations and speaker simulations with the right settings.

These specs are pretty accurate:

The tubes are 40 years old, and I feel a little funny about them. My local tech said that if it ain't broken, don't fix it, but I wonder if retubing the amp would give it some more bass. Sounds good, though...

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

40 year old tubes?! Christ on a crutch, broseph!

Before wasting money on an EQ (or a new neck pup; yours should sound great) I would advise that you re-tube pronto!

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

tubes should at least be tested, filter caps on the other hand are probably shot for sure and that will kill your bottom end. if you have another set of 6l6's throw em in and see what happens.

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

ya, I thought it should be rehauled, also. Peope around me don't think that it needs any work.. don't get me wrong, the amp sounds pretty **** good, it just doesn't have much of a low end.

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

dude, that tech is a retard... 40 year old tubes!!! you definitely need a retube (poweramp only, preamp tubes last a long time)

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

Do a retube - you should have done that a long time ago! - and if it doesn't work for you, then get the pedal. My Boss GE-7 does a great job of adding some ass to my Epiphone. And I do believe any EQ pedal should do it. The Danelectro EQ pedal is cheaper than the Boss, by the way.

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

If you do end up getting a graphic eq pedal look for one that has an overall level control. If found that you have to back off the overall level a little bit to boost certain frequencies. Otherwise you just end up with noise.

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

I think getting my amp retubed would be a good idea. The thing is, I know nothing about tubes! I know that Fender makes Groove tubes... that's about it! Also, I thought that speakers (size) affected your tone more than the tubes themselves...

Re: Eq pedal to give a strat some bottom end?

If your 67' Bassman has it's original filter cap? Regardless of how they look or sound, They should be replaced! Call it preventive maintenance! Those old cardboard caps don't have a 40 year shelf life.:cool2:

youre right, you know nothing about tubes :)

fender doesnt make or own groove tubes, and neither makes any tubes. groove tubes imports and tests tubes made in china, eastern europe and russia which are basically the only places that actually make tubes anymore.

a worn out tube will still work but youll loose power and bottom end

filter caps need to be replaced every 20 years or so if they need it or not, get good quality caps and make sure they guy knows how to charge em up properly
