EQ pedal vs. New pups? Help wanted!

Hey guys, ive decided its time for my tone to be improved.

My guitar is an all stock gibson special faded sg. Stock pickups- 490t/490r
Now dont get me wrong these pickups are ok but my guitar just seems as though it could use a little push. I was thinking about popping a nice seymour duncan in the bridge.

My other option is the boss ge-7 EQ pedal. I just tryed this in the store and oh my god, it makes everything sound so much better. Just to let you know my amp now is a 30 watt marshall practice amp, nothing special but gets the job done.

Pretty much i know that any pickup is going to sound like liquid **** through a bad amp. Right now my amps ok (saving for a nice marshall JCM 800) as ive said it gets the job done. My question is which would you buy? new pups for the guitar or a new EQ pedal? Keep in mind the stocks are gibsons, and are ok, just wondering what you guys would do!

Thanks in advance- Andrew

I bought a Boss ge-7 pedal and wasn't to happy with it. If I put the amp on distortion the EQ would create a loud humming sound. But apart from the hum the pedal does a good job. If I were you I'd try changing a pickup first, but it's up to you. If the hum doesn't annoy you or you rarely play in distort maybe you'd prefer the pedal.

in my opinion it might be better to look into your JCM 800 before you go doing anything with the pups or buying an EQ pedal. Obviously the amp is a large part of your tone, and can make a HUGE difference. So before you modify anything, buy a more powerful amp.

i second this to a point. Money comes into play here

you SHOULD save for the nicer amp as this will improve you tone emensly (sp?). but until then i think its ok for you to spluge on something to improve your tone.

as far as distortion, i suggest GE-7. i have had great luck with a GE-7 combined with distortion.

as far all around cleans and distortion improvement i says p'ups.

my suggestion: Pickups. but yes, when the oppurtunity arrises NEW AMP

Truthfully? I think get a new amp. Then get some new Duncans. Forget about the EQ pedal...you won't need it. Lew

Yeah... dudes are right!

Think of music gear as a chain : you must have a solid anchoring at each end (guitar/pickups and amp/speakers) before adding any additionnal link in-between (effects & gizmos...)....

I met a guy last year, with a nice Gib LP studio, which he loaded with EMG 81 (he was into metallica!), but he's playing thru a cheap full SS peavey head, which is plugged into a home-made cab with hifi/home speakers... such a dull and fizzy sound... that was horrible !
