EQ in front of a tube amp affects the gain texture. This can be useful.
EQ in the loop shapes the overall tone.

Correct, I would go a bit further to say cutting a bit of lows in the front helps for better clarity/definition and boosting the level also gives you more gain. A treble boost kind of thing, just more frequencies to tweak. After that I use the amp's eq section and depending on the situation I may fine tune a bit with another graph eq in the end of the chain.
