eq pedals; how do you use them?

super rad stuff

i've got a boss ge-7. it's the first thing to go into my input(i would put it in the loop but my amp doesn't let me use it in this fashion for some way...) and i usually set mine in 2 particular ways:
-with a big low mids hump with lows cut and treble the same, curved accordingly to the mids(with the 3.2k slider about 4 db higher than either slider on it's sides), usually set this way for a little more distortion and boost. very van halen-ish:smokin:
-scooped, with treble and lows set flat but with mids sucked out with level added to compensate a bit. i usually either have this on for smoother cleans, or have it on with distortion for a lower volume rhythm tone, and switch it off to let the mids back in for a cutting solo tone.

i usually don't like to boost the bass much, as my amp's lows distort and clip too much before i can get a significant boost. i also don't usually boost the treble frequencies too much as they introduce a lot of noise. my amp also has a ton of mids so scooping it actually doesn't cut the volume too badly.

how do you use yours?

edit: i worded something a little badly. instead of my amps lows clipping, i think it's actually the speakers. the lows sound perfectly fine at lower volumes, though when i turn the amp up the speakers start distorting(in a bad way) when i have the bass turned up too.

When I had one a long time ago, I used to put it after distortion for a sharper sound. I'd cut some of the frequencies so that the shape the sliders somewhat resembled a rounded "W" shape. I never boosted any of the frequency sliders above the notched part... but I did boost the volume slider a little instead.

I don't have mine anymore, though.

Man, I do so much crazy stuff with minez. Since we live in the same city, I should show you first hand some time. And wicken's avatar used to be one of our big local celebrities before he passed away. I used to see Miyagi around every once in a while.

I run mine right at the end of my chain, and I leave it switched on. I boost some of the bass and treble frequencies just very slightly to get a more detailed sound.

i remember mr miyagi. my mom served him before when she was a cocktail waitress, said he was rude or something, doesn't matter anymore anyways.
where do you live? i'm in the centennial area.

Re: eq pedals; how do you use them?

In the past I have used them for solo boosts and to roll off highs for a very mellow tone. An EQ is a tremendously versatile pedal.

Re: eq pedals; how do you use them?

I had the GE 7 also. Used it a bit for solo boosts. Also, I used it to boost certain frequencies for particular sounds on certain songs.

It was fairly successful on the boosting certain frequencies for particular songs. It was less successful as a boost. YMMV on the boost function, though. I suspect the wall of sound approach we used limited its effectiveness in that function.

actually, i don't really like boosting any of the frequencies on my GE 7 too much except for the low mids, otherwise it brings in it's own distortion that i dislike very much. the level slider is the worst one though, it has very thin, nasty distortion above 4 or 5 db.

Re: eq pedals; how do you use them?

I actually like the 6 band better for mid boosting [VH-1]. The GE-7 is also a good choice
and they both work well with a distortion pedal[think Randy Rhodes]. Had the MRX 10 band and it was just more than I needed.

Re: eq pedals; how do you use them?

It depends on what I'm going for, but I usually make a shallow A-line with the peak at 3.2kHz. Other than that, I try speaker sim, pickup sim, acoustic sim, etc.

Ska, I live in the Summerlin area, really close to the Suncoast. Most of the places I hang out at are 21+, but if you ever feel like jamming together, let me know.

Re: eq pedals; how do you use them?

if i can butt in here...do you think the 6 band does the job well? or is the 10 band really that much better?

there was a thread on here a while back that concluded the 6 or 7 band was more than adequate. i think the consensus was that the extra frequencies on the 10 band were largely useless for guitar.

Thats IIRC.

Re: eq pedals; how do you use them?

Guitar speakers mostly handle midrange, and the changes at the extremes of frequency are not so dramatic. But if you play through anything other than guitar speakers, stepping beyond 100Hz-6.4kHz is useful.
