EQ pedals? Parametric Vs. 7 band

Whats the difference?

I'm looking for an EQ pedal to run in the Effects loop of the blackstar to experiment with tone variations and such.

I came across parametric EQ pedals, apparently these are a lot more precise and have more tonal variation on them, However i struggle to understand this as you have 7 eq bands on a bog ass standard pedal and a level control (8 sliders normally right) and then one of these parametric things has like 4 knobs :rtf:

So What would be better, a parametric or a traditional slider?

I would call a parametric EQ more tweakable as opposed to more precise (though it can be that as well). Unlike a graphic EQ that is fixed, a parametric lets you set the center frequency and bandwidth (how wide the frequency range is) in addition to the boost or cut. It's a great tool if you know EXACTLY what you want to do with it, but they take a lot of time to dial in. For these reasons I recommend a graphic EQ for quick tweaking.

It would be nice if you specified particular models. I will say this though...parametric has a big advantage because you center on the correct frequency you need to cut or boost. So a three band parametric will generally be a lot better than a 7 or 8 band graphic because of the precision. If you have to move 7 or 8 sliders in a graphic EQ to get your guitar tone then something is amiss in the rest of your rig. But 1 or 2 specific adjustments at just the right place should do the trick.

Whatever the MXR 10 band is, I'd get that. I have one in the loop of my Blackstar and it's absolutely amazing.

Graphic is stupid simple, and that's it's main advantage. What you see is what you get, more or less.

Parametric EQ's are very powerful and versatile, but you need to put a bit of thought into how you dial them in.

For studio applications, I always prefer parametric. For guitar pedal boards, graph, if anything.
