EQ pedals... Which one?

Hi guys,

I have found myself wanting an EQ pedal more and more for use with my band. Mainly for a boosting the mids and general tone shaping for leads.

Boss GE7, MXR 6-band, MXR 10-band, mesa... There are plenty out there!

Does anyone have any recommendations? If not, are there any to avoid?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Re: EQ pedals... Which one?

I love my 6 band MXR, I had one of the 10 bands but I actually prefer this to that one? It does everything you need it to & nothing you don't, plus the price is usually pretty nice too!!!

Re: EQ pedals... Which one?

My advice for shopping for an EQ pedal: Check out what's in stock at your local guitar shop. This way you can listen 1st-hand for hiss & crackles. Everyone has different experiences. I have 2 Boss EQs, and I love 'em. Some people complain that Boss EQs are noisy, but I haven't had this problem with mine. As an alternative to the GE-7, people recommend the Danelectro Fish & Chips- cheaper w/ the same features, and some say less noise.

I say it's best to ignore what it's marketed for (guitar, bass, acoustic, keyboards), since they mostly do the same thing. Pick the one in your budget which sounds the way you want & is easy to return if it behaves differently with your gear.

the fish and chips was fairly noisy when i tried it.

Thanks guys. Yes - it needs to be solid and reliable build-wise.

I do intend to give a bunch a try. If I could have a shortlist to take forward that would be perfect.

AER, Boss, Carl Martin, Danelectro, EHx, Joyo, MarkBass, Mooer, MXR, Source Audio, Whirlwind

Wide range of prices & features here- they all basically do the same thing.

My list of EQ pedals starts and ends with the Mesa 5 Band. Too bad it's so expensive.

Many thanks. As ever, the plan is to try out as many as I can get my hands on.

As far as effects go EQ pedals I like to think are as much of a muchness, as opposed to say OD's, fuzzes and so on which can all be unique in their own quirky ways. That said, few things are ever that straightforward!

Don't rule out a rack mount unit in the effects loop.

I'm salivating over the Mesa.

Re: EQ pedals... Which one?

The more bands the better. Like baritone says, I also believe they are the same thing. I use this dbx 231s (which is actually for pro audio). It is quiet and doesn't color my sound when everything is flat:

Re: EQ pedals... Which one?

Before I seek one out to try, why is it so good?

Short answer: the frequencies are more specific to the tonal range of a guitar than other EQ pedals. It's basically the 5-band EQ that's on a lot of their amps in pedal form. It's an extremely powerful tone shaping tool. It's also $250.

Me too, but that's a lot of money on an EQ pedal. I'll probably get it anyway at some point. That and a Flux 5. I played one through my amp at a shop a few weeks back and it was awesome.

Re: EQ pedals... Which one?

I've had a Kerry King version of the MXR 10 band for years. It's always served me well when I needed it, is well built, and isn't noisy.

I get what you mean. Given that is Mesa it's probably fair to say it is probably very nice.

It's £200 over here, as opposed to £60 for a Boss GE7, £80 MXR 6-band, £120 MXR 10-band... So I will probably not stretch that far in all honesty - unless it is utterly mindblowingly incredible compared to everything else.

Thanks for your input

That's awesome! More than what I am after, but awesome all the same

Thanks. To be honest I am only really considering pedals. Primarily for simplicity's sake as I need to be able to rock up with my stuff, set up and set down fast with minimal fuss. Something to slot onto my pedalboard is ideal from my point of view.

If i was already using rack gear then it would probably be a different story though.
