eq question

hi guys,
if i put a eq pedal in the guitar chain like a boss ge-7 and run it in to the front of my amp. do i take complete control of the eq of the amp, does this knock out the amps eq controls ??????
my vox ac15hw controls are treble, bass, tone but no middle control, i guess using a eq pedal into my amp would give me more options and would add a middle control to my amp?????????

no you take eq control over the guitar signal running into the amp.

the amp's eq is still gonna work as normal.

The EQ will work in conjunction with the amp eq controls. I advise you to set the amp controls as close as you can for your sound and then fine tune with the eq. If you are using any distortion from your amp, the eq to the amp input will alter the way the gain reacts to the guitar and will not shape the tone the way you would expect an EQ to do. If this is the case and you want to fine tune the tonal shape, plug the amp effects send or out to the input of the GE-7 and from the output of the GE-7 to effects return or in of the amplifier. This will place the eq after the distortion and give you the ability to sculpt the overall sound with the EQ.

Set the amp eq controls to the middle positions and then set the eq pedal wave (mid spiked curve is always good). You generally want to place an eq somewhere near the end of the chain or you can put it in the loop and use it for a clean boost. Multiple EQs are fairly normal in serious rigs.

would you say most vox amps tend to have a very bright eq setup????? my ac15 handwired is also very bright, if i use the term fizzy highs to decribe my amp sound, do you guys know what i mean????? could changing the valves tame the fizzy highs or is the answer a EQ pedal????

The Vox tone is chimey, so yes a ringing top end is what they are known for. This is a function mainly of the EL84 power amp tubes, you could try JJ's, as they are known as a more dark tube. This would be a subtle effect. But for more drastic effect you also have tone cut knob, which will reduce the amount of top end in the final section of volume.

An eq pedal can also help, as will the tone knob on your guitar.....they both can be used to do the same thing.

Usually I would use an EQ in-the-loop, but on occasions where I've used it in the signal chain, I agree with the above.

I don't own any Vox amps, but for amps where I've considered the tone as fizzy, I substitute a 5751 preamp tube in V1.

If you want a EQ overhaul sort of thing, the EQ pedal should be in the FX loop.
Otherwise it won't do what you're after.

I had an AC 15HW for about a week.....it went back quite quickly. Not the tone I was after.
