okay, so for quite a while i've been changing everything i can to bring out the sound of my picking in my playing. for the longest time i used lexan picks and they gave off a real high pitched harmonic every time i hit the string. so i switched around with picks and finally landed on nylon, then i potted/covered my pickups to try to tame some of the high end as well. last night i was playing with the EQ on my amp and i got it almost perfect to where i want it. im curious if adding an EQ inline before my amp will be able to help out with this ? or is there another type of effect that will give me a more flat and dead type of scratch rather than a clicky sound ? thanks much.

A picking sound of any type is usually a user error. I've had many students play too crooked with the pick, causing it to scrape wrather than pluck. Also, a pre EQ won't help you out there, it's all about how your playing and the EQ on your amp. Adding more to the loop will only make it more complicated to fix a basic problem. Thin picks can also cause some scraping sounds.

i think we're talking about 2 different scratches. by scratch i just meant that im trying to have the sound be a lot more colorless.. the sound of the pick hitting my strings is something i've worked very hard on to bring out in my playing..its not really something i like to look at as an error because i want it to be part of my tone. im just having a hard time figuring out how to get it to sound how i want.

EQ brings it out for me too. That, and plenty of gain, combined with low midrange. Go nuts man, and have fun with it!

This doesn't really amswer you questions, but P-90's seem to emphasize the picking, at least to my ears. It might be because of the emphasized midrange

SOunds like a technique error to me - and I often really sllice but don't have that problem. Don't choke up so much, whatch out if you are picking over a harmonic node particulrly, use fresh picks, and pick flat....

great advice aceman. i didnt choke up on the pick as much and scooted where i pick back just a tad and it sounded PERFECT. i upped my mids about 3 to get it a little louder and now im very happy with it . this forum rocks haha.
