Equipment Abuse?

I have an older 55w stereo amp - Denon home audio equipment, not a gig amp.

What would the result be if I run a modelling pre-amp into it to power some cabinets? Am I going to toast it, will it clip, etc. I know the dynamics of live sound can damage home audio speakers, but what about an amp?

I'm sure someone out there has tried this.

Thanks

Re: Equipment Abuse?

Hey AniML welcome to the forum!

My first succesful guitar amplification back in the '80s was an old Orpheus semi-hollow into a Boss Turbo Overdrive into a pre-historic 15W/side powered stereo Tesla phono-player :D It had a goofy clipping-transistor sound but at least I could make some noise ;)

Hi-Fi amps for home use are usually way undersized considering power whereas a power amp designed for guitar begins working near meltdown, it is designed for stoopid over-the-top axemen :)

Usually these amps have some toy-class protection but a guitar really can produce such soundpeaks that fry a normal amp power transistors/ICs in a glance. I mean, when you crank it. If you keep the hi-fi amp at low volumes there shouldn't be any problem, not even shooting out the speakers. Er... Don't take it for granted. It depends on the speaker.

Re: Equipment Abuse?

AnimL, you can do this, but with an asterisk:

If you use the LINE OUT of your modeler, that's the same impedence as your CD player, etc.

However, you can't get the gain too high on the output of the modeler, or you will clip the input of the receiver and start breaking things. If the volume is too low, turn up the volume on the receiver, not the output of the modeler.

when i was young i used to plug my guitar to a tape deck and crank the input level to get some distortion and fine tune it with the EQ deck. talk about rack systems :) i got some decent sounds from it but i only use it for practicing.in your case if your modeler has line output you can connect directly to your home stereo.its only 55W so you can't play at PA levels
